A sore throat can occur at any time and is caused by a variety of reasons. Some sore throats may be caused by a bacterial infection or strep throat, while others are viral infections. In any case, sore throats are highly contagious, and it is important to address the issue as soon as symptoms appear. Fortunately, there are natural remedies for sore throats that you can use at home and do not require a prescription for antibiotics to treat.

Symptoms
A sore throat is caused by an inflammatory process of the throat and tonsils that causes pain when swallowing.
Signs and symptoms of a sore throat vary depending on the cause. Some include:

  • painful, swollen glands in the throat or jaw

Viral infections generally come with cold or flu symptoms, such as a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, cough, mild fever, and fatigue. In adults, viral infections account for 85% to 90% of sore throats.
Aside from streptococcal infections, a sore throat can also be a sign of tonsillitis. Of course, streptococcus can cause tonsillitis, so it can be a combination of issues leading to a sore throat.
Sometimes, a sore throat can be the result of acid reflux or allergies. In the case of acid reflux, stomach acid comes up through the esophagus, which can lead to irritation and pain in the throat. Other symptoms of acid reflux include dry mouth, difficulties swallowing, nausea, acid or food regurgitation, bitter taste in the mouth, and heartburn.
Certain foods or environmental triggers can cause an allergic reaction, leading to a sore throat. Symptoms of seasonal allergies include discomfort and sore throat, watery eyes, congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and ear irritation.
Remedies for Sore Throat
1. Raw Honey
Raw honey has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that can help treat respiratory conditions such as sore throat. It can naturally soothe the throat and reduce swelling. Other benefits of raw honey include its ability to reduce mucus secretion and coughing, which can occur along with a sore throat.
According to research, honey has an inhibitory effect on approximately 60 species of bacteria and some species of fungi and viruses. It also has antioxidant capacity due to a wide range of compounds, including phenolics, peptides, organic acids, and enzymes.
Add raw honey to warm water or tea, or mix it with lemon essential oil to create a quick-acting sore throat remedy.
2. Bone Broth
Consuming bone broth will help you stay hydrated, as it supports the immune system, allowing you to recover quickly. Bone broth is rich in nutrients, easy to digest, flavorful, and speeds up healing.
