MY MOTHER WAS LOCKED IN A CLOSET DURING MY WEDDING CEREMONY

Time stopped. The music faded. All the guests turned their heads.

My mother was trembling with rage. Her dress was wrinkled, her hair disheveled, and her voice broke between suffering and revolt. She looked as if she had just come out of a fight. And in a way, she had.

— You… you locked me in! You pulled the bolt from the outside and turned off the light! Do you know what you said to me before you left? “I hope you don’t come out before it’s all over.”

My eyes widened in horror. My bride, Ana, froze. She tried to laugh, embarrassed, but no one was laughing.

— What’s happening here? the priest asked, bewildered.

My mother couldn’t stop anymore.
— I banged on the walls. I screamed. I kicked. I broke a nail trying to open that damn closet. And all I could hear was music. The music from my daughter’s wedding! And no one could hear me!

Bitter tears streamed down her cheeks.

— I didn’t come to ruin anything. But you need to know what happened. Because my daughter doesn’t deserve to start a life with a lie, with someone who hates her own mother-in-law!

I felt the ground shake beneath my feet.
— Ana… is it true?

She blinked rapidly, her lips pressed together.
— I didn’t want to hurt her, she finally said. But I couldn’t stand the idea of being the center of attention. It’s always about her! It was the dress, it was the dance, it was the speech. I felt like she was stealing my moment!

A murmur arose among the guests. I felt shame wash over me. Not for myself. But for the woman who was supposed to be my partner in life. The one who was supposed to love me and respect my family.

My mother turned to me.
— If you want to be with her, that’s your choice. But I was locked in a closet like an animal. On the day I was supposed to be proud of you. On the day I was supposed to see you happy.

I raised my gaze.
— No, mom. It’s not my choice. Not anymore.

I turned to Ana, handed her the bouquet, and simply said:
— Leave.

She tried to protest. To touch my hand. But I took a step back.
— What you did is unforgivable. And if you were capable of this today, what could I expect from you for the rest of my life?

She left crying, her heels sinking into the garden pavement.

The ceremony was canceled. Guests began to leave, some whispering, others with their heads down. But I stayed there, next to my mother. I took her hand, wiped her tears, and said:

— Let’s dance anyway. Just the two of us.

And in that moment, in the heart-wrenching silence of an unfinished wedding, mother and daughter danced under the open sky, and their love was the only music that mattered.
