The Millionaire’s Daughter Had Never Spoken, But When a Poor Little Girl Gave Her Water

Andrei rolled down the window slightly and took out his wallet. He didn’t know exactly why he was doing it, but he felt he had to.
— Hey, little one, come here, he said.

The girl approached shyly, with big warm eyes. She held a bag of water in her hands, and her voice was soft:
— Would you like one, sir? Just two lei.

Andrei smiled at her and took out a 50 lei bill.
— Here, keep the change.
The girl was astonished. Her lips trembled, but before she could say anything, Maria reached out her hand and took the bag of water.

The gazes of the two girls met. It was a brief moment, but something in the air changed.
Maria touched the bag, then the girl, gently, on her hand.
— Thank you… — she whispered.

Andrei felt his heart stop for a moment.
— What did you say?! — he asked, his voice trembling.
— I said… thank you, dad.

Tears filled his eyes. After six years of silence, he heard his child speak.
The girl with the water looked scared, not understanding what was happening.

Andrei got out of the car and hugged Maria tightly.
— My God… I can’t believe it! You are talking!

Maria looked at him and then turned to the other girl.
— She helped me, she said with a trembling voice. I felt… that I had to thank her.

Andrei knelt beside the stranger girl.
— What’s your name, dear?
— Ana, sir. I sell water so I can buy food for myself and my little brother.

Andrei looked at her in silence. Something in his soul broke.
The girl wore an old t-shirt and had a look that spoke more than any words.

— Ana, where do you live? — he asked gently.
— In a shelter, when we are lucky. Other times we sleep near the train station.

Andrei felt his chest tighten. He took his coat from the car seat and placed it on Ana’s shoulders.
— From now on, you won’t sell water anymore. We will take you with us.

Ana looked at him incredulously.
— Really, sir?
— Really, said Andrei, and smiled.

Maria reached out her hand again.
— Dad, can she be my sister?

Andrei could no longer hold back his tears. He hugged Maria and stroked her head.
— Yes, my princess, from now on you are not alone.

The sun began to set over the city, painting the sky in a warm orange.
Two girls — one born in silence, the other in need — had found their voice and hope through each other.

For the first time in a long time, Andrei felt that everything that had made sense in life was that moment.
Because sometimes, the greatest miracles do not come from hospitals or money, but from a simple gesture: a hand extended and a glass of water.
