The Children Laughed at a Poorly Dressed Girl Traveling with Them on the School Bus

The children laughed at a poorly dressed girl they traveled with on the school bus, teasing her that she smelled bad. They were surprised to see her one day on television, which completely changed their opinion of her.

Nico was not like all the other kids in the first grade. She was much shorter than her classmates and was thin and fragile.

All the kids in her class knew that Nico lived only with her mother and that they had a poor life. Unfortunately, one day, things got worse.

Nico took the bus home every day because her mother worked two jobs to support her. The bus driver, Mrs. Elena, was already used to Nico traveling alone and waited for her every day.

Nico walked alone to the bus stop every day, and no one knew why.

One day, Mrs. Elena noticed that Nico looked very sad while waiting for the bus. She was dressed in old clothes full of holes, stains, and marks.

“Good morning, Nico!” greeted Mrs. Elena. “Are you okay?”

Nico looked up and smiled. “Good morning, Mrs. Elena. Yes, I’m fine,” she replied, getting on the bus. She was happy that someone was talking to her because she was used to being ignored by others.

When she got on the bus, there were already a few kids inside. A girl, Marta, was a spoiled girl from the second grade. She immediately saw Nico and laughed at her clothes.

“Oh my!” exclaimed Marta. “Look at that country girl!” she said, pointing at Nico.

Nico looked down, embarrassed by the sudden attention she was attracting. She quietly sat in the last row of the bus and began to cry.

“Where did you get those clothes? From the trash?” asked Marta, moving closer to Nico’s seat to tease her. As she approached, she wrinkled her nose suddenly.

“Ugh! You smell like a garbage bag!” she told her. Marta’s friends made the same gesture, pinching their noses.

“Do you even wash or at least brush your teeth?” one of them laughed.

“You can’t be serious. You can’t come to school like this, smelling and looking like that,” said Marta, pulling Nico off her seat. “Come on, go home! Get out of the bus and go back to your dirty house,” she told her, tugging at her arm.

The children laughed at Nico every day because of her appearance.

Nico was in pain, but she said nothing. Instead, she quietly cried while the girls teased her and tried to push her out of the school bus.

Then, suddenly, the girls jumped back, startled by a shout. “Enough! Stop tormenting this girl!” someone said.

Mrs. Elena had heard everything and decided to stop the bus to support Nico. Walking to the back, she asked Nico to sit in the front, right behind the driver’s seat.

After they were dropped off at school, Mrs. Elena couldn’t stop thinking about the incident on the bus. She decided to find out why Nico came to school in dirty clothes.

So, after work, she went to Nico’s house. She learned the whole truth and was surprised by what she saw there. Mrs. Elena’s daughter worked at a media company. She immediately called her daughter and told her Nico’s story.

In the following week, Nico arrived at the bus stop dressed in old clothes. Marta and her friends held their noses and whispered to each other. Mrs. Elena shook her head but was happy that the girls no longer said anything mean about Nico.

A few days later, there was a meeting at school with the teachers, the children, and their parents. Nico and her mother did not come. Mrs. Elena entered the classroom and turned on the television right in the middle of the meeting.

One of the most-watched television stations aired a story about Nico. It was filmed by Mrs. Elena’s daughter and picked up by the station.

When Mrs. Elena learned about Nico’s story, she realized that the whole country could learn something about how she lived. Although she was a small and fragile girl, she had a strong character that inspired the bus driver.

Nico grew up without a father and learned the value of independence. Her mother fell ill, and the insurance decided not to cover the treatments. So, while Nico’s mother was bedridden, she could no longer take Nico to school, cook for her, or clean the house.

Nico took on the responsibilities of caring for herself and her mother while she was sick. She cleaned the house, took out the trash, cooked for herself and her mother, washed the clothes, and gave her mother her medications.

After seeing the show, Marta and Nico’s other classmates understood why her clothes were always torn and dirty – she had taken on responsibilities before going to school.

The news on television glorified the little, yet brave and strong Nico. Mrs. Elena revealed the real reason she decided to turn on the television, addressing the parents in the room.

“Your children tease Nico every day on the bus. Kids, I hope the show taught you how important it is to be kind to everyone we meet every day. We all fight battles we don’t know about, so it’s better to be kind regardless of the situation,” she told them.

Since then, no one laughed at Nico anymore. The children always greeted her first and treated her kindly, offering her snacks and drinks on the way to school.

Marta and her friends gave Nico some of their dresses so she could come to school in clean clothes. Their parents raised money so that Nico’s mother could have the surgery.

Soon, the woman was able to return home from the hospital and start working again. When they got home, they were surprised to find the director of the television station waiting for them with a check.

“These are donations from viewers moved by your story. We hope you use them to secure Nico’s future and improve your situation,” said the director, handing them the check.

With that money, Nico and her mother were able to pay for Nico’s school fees and buy a small but new house, living comfortably.

What can we learn from this story?

A Scottish proverb said: “Do not judge by appearances; a rich heart may be hidden under a shabby coat.”

The children were quick to judge Nico for how she looked, not realizing that she was struggling to take care of herself while her mother was ill. It is important not to judge others quickly, as we never know what they are going through.
