MY FATHER JUST WOKE UP FROM A COMA

My father and my wife never got along very well, but after he had the accident and fell into a coma, she always came with me to the hospital. We brought flowers and spent hours talking to him, hoping he could hear us.

It wasn’t just the two of us visiting him. My mother, my daughter, and my brother also came.

We all prayed for his recovery because he was our support, the most important person in our lives, and someone we could rely on no matter how tough things got.

Weeks went by, and just when we were starting to lose hope that he would ever recover, he squeezed my mother’s hand.

It was a good sign and the first step towards a full recovery.

Eventually, he woke up from the coma.
We couldn’t have been prouder of the fighter he was.

After he managed to speak, although at first slowly and unclearly, we were eager to find out what he had seen or felt during all that time he had been unconscious. In a weak voice, he said, “Your wife was here.” And he looked straight into the eyes of Livia, my wife.

She seemed frozen. As if she didn’t expect Dad to say something like that.

“I know, Dad,” I replied. “She has always been here, with me.”

“No,” he barely whispered. “She was here with Radu.”

Radu was my brother, and according to my father, while he was in a coma, my wife and my brother had been visiting him together, without me knowing.

Livia opened her mouth but couldn’t say anything. “I…” she whispered.

Radu looked troubled, ran his hand behind his neck, and tried to make a joke to change the subject, but no one laughed.

“What’s going on?” I asked, turning to Livia.

Livia said she felt the need to talk to my father, hoping he could hear her, and Radu just helped her mend things with him after years of misunderstandings. She regretted all the arguments she had with Dad, and now that he was in a coma, she feared she wouldn’t have the chance to apologize.

Radu confirmed her story.

My father looked at me and said, “Son, there’s something else you need to know…”

I urged him to tell me everything, and he told me that Livia had indeed tried to get close to him. She talked to him about football and read him sports magazines. She shared things from her personal life and repeatedly told him how sorry she was for all the past conflicts.

Dad then said he discovered a side of Livia that he had never known before.

I felt an immense relief.

My family was finally where it was supposed to be.
