Pomegranates: Dangerous Side Effects and Drug Interactions

Pomegranates have been a traditional remedy in Ayurveda for thousands of years. Their antibacterial properties have been particularly appreciated. Not only the fruits but also the flowers, peels, seeds, and bark of the plant are used by many. That said, it is important to understand the side effects of pomegranates.
Although pomegranates are generally considered safe, they can cause some adverse effects in certain individuals. These include drug interactions, low blood pressure, allergies, or even complications during pregnancy.
Side Effects of Pomegranate
1. May Cause Allergies
This is the most serious of all the side effects of pomegranate. Although rare, allergies to pomegranate can be life-threatening. Please take any allergy symptoms seriously.
Symptoms of these allergies include itching, swelling, throat irritation, stomach pain, and hives. In severe cases, breathing difficulties, swelling of the throat and tongue, and anaphylaxis may occur.
In one study, a patient developed ear swelling, erythema (redness of the skin), and itching within 10 minutes of ingesting pomegranate. Further investigation found that the patient was also allergic to apples and birch pollen.
2. May Interact with Certain Medications
Pomegranate can interact with certain medications and cause unwanted side effects. These include the following (make sure to check with your doctor):
Medications metabolized and broken down by the liver, such as amitriptyline, desipramine, fluoxetine, ondansetron, tramadol, rosuvastatin, etc.
Medications for high blood pressure, such as ACE inhibitors and antihypertensive medications. Juice can lower blood pressure too much, especially if someone is taking antihypertensive medications.
According to another report, pomegranate may inhibit the action of an enzyme important for drug metabolism.
If you are taking any form of medication, please consult your doctor before consuming pomegranate. This is especially important if you are taking medications for high blood pressure.
3. May Lower Blood Pressure Too Much
Studies show that pomegranates can lower blood pressure levels. This is good news for most people. However, individuals with low blood pressure or uncontrolled fluctuations in blood pressure should stay away from pomegranates.
This is one of the reasons why pomegranate can cause problems during surgery. Therefore, stop consuming pomegranate at least two weeks before a scheduled surgery. Since research is limited in this regard, it is important to discuss with your doctor.

4. May Cause Fetal Growth Restrictions During Pregnancy
While the juice may be safe, there is not enough research regarding the safety of other forms of pomegranate (such as pomegranate extract). Therefore, avoid pomegranates and pomegranate juice during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown that supplementation with pomegranate juice reduced abdominal and head circumference in fetuses.
If you have a history of allergic reactions, avoid pomegranate and consult your doctor.
5. May Cause Digestive Disorders
There is not enough information in this regard. Excessive consumption of pomegranate can cause various disorders, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea in some individuals.
According to anecdotal evidence, excessive intake of this fruit may irritate the gastrointestinal tract. However, there are no scientific studies to support this.
These are some of the potential negative effects of pomegranate. If you experience any allergy after consuming pomegranates, here’s what you can do.
What to Do If You Experience Allergies
Stop eating the fruit and seek medical assistance immediately. But until you see a doctor, you can use some quick remedies.
If your symptoms involve a skin condition, do not rub or scratch the area. Also, do not wash the area with water or soap for a long time, as it may irritate the area further. Apply a lotion or ointment for the skin. This helps maintain skin moisture. Additionally, wear loose clothing.
In the case of other severe reactions, please rush to the doctor immediately. Be alert to other symptoms such as chest pain, drowsiness, confusion, weakness, and difficulty breathing.
Conclusion
Pomegranate is one of the most nutritious fruits. But if you are allergic to it, be cautious. Excessive consumption of pomegranate can cause some adverse effects. Therefore, consult your doctor.
