I Was One Step Away from Being Kicked Off the Plane Due to My Weight

I slowly stood up, turned to the flight attendant and the young woman, and said loudly enough for the entire plane to hear:

— I have every right to be here. I have a ticket that I paid for correctly. My weight is the result of an illness, not laziness or a lack of self-control, as you might like to believe. And I am not obligated to explain to anyone how my body looks.

If you don’t have enough space, you can buy two seats or move. But asking for me to be kicked off the plane — that is discrimination. And if the airline agrees with you, I will sue the company — for violating my legally guaranteed rights.

I paused and looked her straight in the eye, without blinking:

— Your words humiliate me as a person. You insulted me in public, and I am ready to hold you accountable. If you don’t stop, I will call the police right here.

Silence fell over the plane. The young woman suddenly softened, and the confidence in her expression disappeared. The flight attendant nodded, visibly embarrassed, and murmured:

— Ma’am, of course you have the right to fly. I will take care of this passenger.

In the end, the girl was moved to another seat, further away. I remained by the window, and many passengers smiled encouragingly at me afterward, and a lady gently whispered:

— Thank you for those words. You were amazing.

At that moment, I felt pride. I am not to blame for how my body looks. And no one has the right to treat me like a pariah.
