My boyfriend told me that the locked room was “just for storage” — but his dog knew the truth

“It’s my little sister,” he said, his voice trembling. “Her name is Andreea.”

I blinked, trying to process. “Your sister? But you… never said you had a sister.”

“Because I’m not allowed to take care of her. Legally, I can’t. She was taken by Child Protective Services when our parents died. She was too young, I was only 20. They didn’t think I was capable of raising her. They put her in foster care.”

I looked at him, unable to say anything.

“But two years ago, she ran away from there. She called me. She was crying. I brought her here and… I hid her. I swore I wouldn’t leave her alone again. She’s all I have left.”

It was hard for me to react. Part of me was angry because he had lied to me. Another part was overwhelmed with sadness. And in all this chaos, Cezar came up to me and licked my hand.

“I know it’s wrong,” Rareș continued. “I know I could get into big trouble. But she’s happy here. She goes to school online. We make sure no one sees us. I didn’t know how to tell you.”

I leaned down and looked at the room again. A warm light was coming through the window. On the desk, the drawing was unfinished but full of hope.

“You should have told me,” I finally said.

“I know.”

“But… I won’t tell anyone.”

His eyes filled with tears. “Thank you.”

“On one condition,” I added. “We need to stop hiding. We need to find a solution. A legal one. A real one. She deserves more than fear.”

And that evening, for the first time, Rareș took my hand without trembling. And Cezar, loyal as ever, settled quietly at our feet.

Because finally, in that overly tidy apartment, the truth had come to light.

And the new beginning had just begun.
