Are you looking for a facial solution for oily skin or just a simple face wash? You’ve come to the right place. This recipe for a clean face can work wonders for your skin, especially if it is oily and prone to acne. While most store-bought facial products contain artificial ingredients and can be expensive, this DIY facial cleanser can be made with four simple ingredients in less than two minutes.
Key Ingredients for Cleansing the Face
1. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil contains three fatty acids—capric, caprylic, and lauric—that have both disinfectant and antimicrobial properties, helping to protect and heal microbial infections. Studies show it is effective against bacterial-related issues, such as skin infections. Research indicates that virgin coconut oil improves symptoms of skin conditions by moisturizing and soothing the skin, plus it is both anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants.
If coconut oil irritates your skin or you have an allergy, consider replacing it with argan oil, jojoba oil, or sea buckthorn oil.
2. Raw Manuka Honey
Did you know that honey is antibacterial? In fact, it reacts with body fluids to produce hydrogen peroxide, creating an inhospitable environment for bacteria.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar contains specific components such as acetic acid, lactic acid, succinic acid, and citric acid, all of which have been shown to inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes, the specific strain of bacteria responsible for causing acne. These beneficial components can also reduce scarring. Additionally, it serves as a good facial toner.
If you have a problem with apple cider vinegar, you can choose coconut vinegar instead.
4. Tea Tree Essential Oil
Research shows that tea tree oil can be as effective as benzoyl peroxide for treating acne, but with less irritating side effects. In a 2017 study conducted by the Australasian College of Dermatologists, researchers evaluated the combination of tea tree oil gel versus a face wash without tea tree oil. Subjects applied tea tree oil twice a day for three months and were assessed at various points along the way. The study concluded that tea tree oil can significantly improve mild to moderate acne.
How to Make and Use It
Making this DIY facial cleanser couldn’t be easier. Melt the coconut oil (if it is not already liquid) in a small pan over very low heat.
Pour it into a small glass bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and mix until well combined. Pour into a glass bottle and store in a cool place.
For use before bed and/or first thing in the morning, wet your face with warm water. Put a small amount of the solution in your palm and rub your hands together, then gently apply to your face, especially with your fingertips.
Cleanse your face for 20 to 30 seconds, then rinse with warm water. Pat dry with a clean towel.
