What is bentonite clay
Also known as volcanic ash, bentonite clay is the residue of volcanoes. It is pure and natural and is available worldwide, but significant deposits of this clay can be found near Montana and Wyoming (hence the name bentonite clay).
The clay has a negative charge that allows it to attract positively charged substances such as toxins, bacteria, fungi, etc. But how does it help our skin?
Is bentonite clay good for your skin?
Our bodies are exposed to harmful pollutants every day, from free radicals to sun exposure, dust, and oils. Our face is exposed to all these damaging elements. While we cannot control most of these factors, we can certainly reduce the negative effects by following an effective skincare routine.
The negatively charged ions in the clay attract and extract toxins from the surface of the skin. The clay also contains magnesium, silicate, copper, iron, and potassium—all of which further enhance skin health.
In addition to cleansing the surface of the skin, bentonite clay has a number of other benefits:
Benefits of bentonite clay for your skin
Treats acne
Acne is caused by excess sebum secretion on the skin’s surface, which attracts and promotes the growth of acne-causing bacteria. This results in breakouts and leaves scars behind. Bentonite clay absorbs excess sebum from the upper layer of the skin, thus preventing acne. Using it a few times a month is an excellent way to control acne.
Unclogs skin pores
The negatively charged ions in the clay, as we have seen, attract dust, dirt, sebum, and even unclog pores. In this way, the clay prevents blemishes and blackheads.
Extracts toxins from the skin
We have already seen how bentonite clay extracts toxins from the skin through topical application. Interestingly, similar results can be obtained by ingesting it. It helps eliminate toxins from your body, which improves your skin health.
Naturally exfoliates the skin
Bentonite clay acts as an abrasive that removes dead cells from the upper layer of the skin, thus cleansing the skin.
Softens the skin
The clay smooths out bumps, unclogs pores, and removes blackheads. The result? Softer skin!
After using the clay, rinse your face and moisturize. After a few applications, you will notice a remarkable difference.
Brightens the skin
Using bentonite clay is an inexpensive way to achieve a brighter complexion.
Reduces the appearance of scars
If acne is a problem, the scars left behind after acne treatment are another issue. The clay treats not only the breakouts but also the residues that can cause scarring. Consistent use will yield excellent results.
Heals and regenerates skin tissues
Bentonite clay heals damaged skin tissues and helps regenerate new skin cells. In this way, it helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines by tightening the skin.
Even skin tone
Many factors can cause skin discoloration, and when not addressed in time, this can lead to a pigmented and uneven skin tone. Since bentonite clay cleanses pores, reduces the appearance of scars, and exfoliates the skin, it can work wonders on skin tone.
Tones and tightens the skin
Due to its exfoliating properties, bentonite clay removes whiteheads and blackheads. It retains moisture and removes excess oil, leaving the skin feeling firmer than usual. If you have dry skin, apply a moisturizing lotion.
Reduces blemishes
Blemishes are another problem that most people with acne struggle with. Even if acne and inflammation decrease, the blemishes that remain afterward are difficult to treat. Bentonite clay helps reduce the appearance of these stubborn marks.
Prevents blackheads
The clay removes dead skin cells and cleanses pores, which can otherwise form blackheads. It cleans existing blackheads and also prevents the appearance of new ones.

Here are some tips that will help you:
Tips for better use of bentonite clay
Observe how the clay mask reacts with your skin. You may notice breakouts a few times as it eliminates toxins. However, if the breakouts are recurrent, we recommend discontinuing use.
Use wooden or ceramic spatulas and bowls. Avoid putting the clay in contact with metal utensils as this can reduce its effectiveness.
Do not leave it on for too long. Make sure to rinse it off within 30 minutes (it should dry by then).
Avoid the clay if your skin is too dry.
Did you know that, besides the wonders it does for the skin, bentonite clay, when ingested, also works to improve gut health and immunity? If you wish to ingest it, start with a small amount.
