The Little Girl Held Her Younger Brother in Her Arms and Asked for Milk

Dima led them to his black car, a shiny limousine that seemed to be from a world Carina didn’t even dare to dream of. The little girl held tightly onto the carton of milk as if it were the most precious treasure.

On the way, Dima said nothing. He glanced at them occasionally through the rearview mirror. Andrei had fallen asleep in his sister’s arms, while Carina, exhausted, stared out the window, incredulous.

— “Where are we going, sir?” she asked in a faint voice.

— “To my home. Don’t be afraid, I won’t take your brother. You’ll have something warm to eat, then we’ll talk,” he replied gently.

When they arrived, the large door of the villa opened, and the smell of fresh soup filled the air. An elderly woman with a warm smile greeted them.
— “Dima, who are these children?”
— “A miracle that reminded me I still have a heart,” he said with a sigh.

They ate in silence. Carina tore small pieces of bread for Andrei, careful not to make a mess on the table. Dima watched them and remembered the times when he had been hungry, sleeping in the train station with a bag of clothes and a dream too big for a child.

After dinner, he took them to a spacious room with soft beds. Carina looked at him with distrust.
— “Why are you doing this for us? You don’t know us.”

Dima smiled sadly.
— “Because once, someone did the same for me. And because you had the courage to tell the truth, even when you were hungry.”

In the days that followed, the children’s lives changed. Carina went to school, Andrei was enrolled in kindergarten, and every evening, Dima read them stories before bed. Soon, a bond formed between them that neither time nor money could buy.

At one point, the authorities learned about their situation. Dima went to the town hall with all the necessary documents, determined.
— “I want to adopt them. Officially.”

The clerk, a woman over 50, looked at him for a long time.
— “Are you sure? It’s not easy to raise children who are not yours.”

He smiled.
— “Yes, they are mine. I just found them a little later.”

A few months later, on a warm spring day, Carina and Andrei received their new certificates. When they left the office, the little girl hugged Dima and whispered:
— “Do you remember when I said I would pay you back when I grew up? Now I know how I will do it… I will be good, like you.”

Dima smiled, tears in his eyes.
— “That’s the only debt I want you to repay, little girl.”

And in that moment, in the flower-filled yard of their home, a man who once lived only for money learned that true wealth is not counted in millions, but in the hearts you heal.
