Garlic Lard Ointment for Bone Pain – An Old Recipe with Powerful Effects

Bone and joint pain can occur at any age, especially in cold seasons or in cases of chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatism, or osteoporosis. Among the natural remedies used for generations is a simple yet extremely effective ointment made from pork lard and crushed garlic.

This combination has been used for a long time to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve joint mobility. Here’s how to prepare it and how it acts on the body.

Ingredients and Traditional Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons of pure pork lard (preferably homemade, unsalted)
  • 6-8 cloves of Romanian garlic (organic, as aromatic as possible)

Preparation method:

  1. Peel the garlic and crush it well until it forms a fine paste.
  2. In a small pot (preferably stainless steel or ceramic), heat the lard on very low heat, just until it becomes liquid. Do not boil it!
  3. Add the crushed garlic and stir constantly for 2-3 minutes. Do not let it burn.
  4. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
  5. Strain if you want a finer texture (optional). Pour into a dark glass jar.
  6. Let it cool completely, then store it in the refrigerator. It lasts for 2-3 weeks.

How to Use

Apply the ointment in the evening, on the painful areas, using circular massage for 5-10 minutes. Cover with a cotton material and, if necessary, with a warm cloth or towel. Repeat daily for 7-10 consecutive days or as needed.

Benefits of This Ointment

1. Relieves joint and rheumatic pain

Garlic contains active compounds (especially allicin) that have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. These penetrate through the skin and reduce pain intensity. Lard, being a fatty medium, promotes the absorption of these substances deeply, where inflammation affects the joints.

2. Stimulates local circulation

Applying the ointment and gentle massage helps activate circulation in the affected area. This process is essential for relieving tension in tissues and reducing stiffness.

3. Local detoxification through mild sweating

Sulfur compounds in garlic sometimes cause a local warming sensation, which promotes the elimination of accumulated toxins in tissues, a phenomenon often encountered in chronic arthritis or gout.

4. Protects against infections

Garlic is a well-known antibacterial and antifungal agent. The ointment can prevent skin superinfection when used on areas with irritated or cracked skin, for example, in advanced osteoarthritis or rheumatic eczema.

5. Contains no additives or preservatives

Being a natural preparation, free from chemicals, this ointment can be safely used by sensitive individuals with allergies to compounds found in synthetic ointments. Home preparation ensures complete control over the ingredients.

Studies and Research

A study published in 2020 in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine showed that allicin and other compounds in garlic reduce inflammatory markers, including interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha, involved in joint pain and chronic inflammation. The study was conducted on patients with rheumatoid arthritis and showed a significant decrease in pain and joint stiffness following the use of garlic extract.

Additionally, animal lard has been used as an excipient in dermatological and anti-inflammatory preparations in traditional Eastern European medicine. Modern studies confirm that animal fats have an excellent capacity to transport active substances through the skin, more effectively than many vegetable oils.

Contraindications

  • Do not use this ointment on injured skin or open wounds.
  • Avoid application if you have a known allergy to garlic or if the skin reacts with irritation.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use.
  • Do not apply to the face, especially around the eyes or nose, as garlic can cause mild burns.
  • This ointment is not recommended for children under 6 years old.
