Every time the husband returned home from a business trip

…a package wrapped in a blue blanket.

Irina sat next to him, and Mihai turned up the volume. There was no sound, just the shaky image of his wife caressing that small package. Then, when she unwrapped the blanket, his heart skipped a beat.

It was a baby.

A baby with round cheeks, sleeping peacefully. Irina held him with such tenderness that tears instantly welled up in Mihai’s eyes. But his mind was racing: How? Whose child is this?

He and Irina had tried for years to have one, without success. Doctors, treatments, prayers – all in vain. And now… a child appeared out of nowhere?

The next day, Mihai couldn’t stay away any longer. He returned home, pretending that his flight had been canceled. Irina gasped when she saw him at the door, but quickly hid her emotions.

— What happened? I thought you were in Bucharest!

— The plan changed, he replied, trying to sound calm.

But his gaze had already slipped toward the bedroom. The sheets were hanging on the line, and the same scent of lavender lingered in the air.

— Irina, we need to talk, he said, his voice trembling.

She understood immediately. Her eyes filled with tears.
— Mihai, please, don’t be upset…

— Just tell me the truth, Irina! Who is the child?

She collapsed into a chair, trembling.
— He’s not someone else’s, Mihai. He’s ours.

— What? What do you mean?

Then, Irina told him everything. During one of his long trips, she had received a call from the hospital. A young woman had died during childbirth, and her baby, abandoned without relatives, urgently needed a temporary mother until the placement paperwork was completed.

Irina, who volunteered at the maternity ward, had accepted without telling Mihai. She didn’t want to give him false hope. She didn’t want to hurt him again, as she had every time the pregnancy tests had been negative.

— I took care of him, Mihai. At night, I held him in my arms and cried. Not because he wasn’t ours… but because I realized how much I missed being a mother.

Mihai stood still, looking at her. Then, without a word, he approached and took the baby in his arms. The child stirred a little and let out a faint coo, and Mihai felt something break inside him.

— Irina… you should have told me, he whispered.

— I was afraid you wouldn’t understand. That you would think I was trying to replace the one we couldn’t have…

He looked up at her.
— Maybe we couldn’t have him… but look, God sent him to us in another way.

In the days that followed, Mihai and Irina began the adoption process. It wasn’t easy — trips to authorities, paperwork, tests, endless bureaucracy. But this time, Mihai was determined. He was no longer the man who always ran off on business trips; he was the father who was coming home.

A few months later, Irina called him while he was at the office. Her voice trembled with joy.
— Mihai… we got the news! It’s official. He’s ours!

He set the phone down on the desk, wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, and stepped outside, looking at the clear sky.

When he got home, Irina was standing in the doorway, holding the little one in her arms, just like on the first night of the filming. This time, however, Mihai was no longer a man full of doubts.

He approached, embraced them both, and simply said:
— From now on, I won’t go anywhere. This is all I need.

And in that moment, in the quiet of their home in Brașov, he felt truly at home for the first time.
