What to Take for Mild Urinary Infections Without Antibiotics

Mild urinary infections, especially recurrent ones, can be treated in the early stages with the help of natural remedies. Some plants and extracts have proven antimicrobial effects, reduce inflammation, and support the regeneration of the urinary tract mucosa.

The Most Effective Natural Remedies:

1. Horsetail Tea (Equisetum arvense)

  • Preparation: 1 tablespoon of dried plant in 250 ml of water. Boil for 5 minutes, let it steep for 10 minutes, then strain.
  • Administration: 2-3 cups per day for 7-10 days.
  • Action: Diuretic, anti-inflammatory, healing for the urinary tract.
  • Study: A study published in Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2015) showed that horsetail extract has a significant antimicrobial effect on strains of E. coli, responsible for 70-90% of urinary infections.

2. Cranberry Extract (Vaccinium macrocarpon)

  • Form: standardized capsules or pure unsweetened juice.
  • Administration: 300-500 mg of extract twice a day or 50-100 ml of juice per day.
  • Benefits: Inhibits the adhesion of bacteria to the bladder wall.
  • Relevant Study: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (2023) concluded from an analysis of over 4400 participants that cranberry significantly reduces the risk of recurrent urinary infections, especially in women with frequent episodes.

3. Corn Silk Tea (Zea mays)

  • Preparation: 1 tablespoon of dried corn silk in 250 ml of hot water. Steep for 15 minutes.
  • Administration: 3 cups per day.

  • Study: Published in Iranian Journal of Kidney Diseases (2019), corn silk reduced urinary inflammatory markers and increased urinary volume in patients with recurrent infections.

4. Essential Oil of Oregano (Origanum vulgare)

  • Administration: 1-2 drops diluted in edible oil (olive/coconut), twice a day, max. 5 days.
  • Precautions: Do not administer undiluted! Contraindicated during pregnancy.
  • Scientific Evidence: A study in Frontiers in Microbiology (2020) demonstrated that carvacrol and thymol from oregano have bactericidal effects, including on antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

5. Bilberry Tea (Vaccinium myrtillus)
