Radu was stunned. Patricia was sitting on the couch, smiling smugly, as if she had won an old battle.
Andrei was playing on the floor with some blocks, untouched by the tension in the air. I, on the other hand, felt my blood boiling.
“You brought her into our house? And for that, you sent me to my parents every weekend?” My voice trembled, but not from fear, rather from anger.
Radu rubbed the back of his neck, searching for excuses. “It’s for Andrei’s sake… Patricia wants to see him in a familiar environment. I don’t want conflicts to arise.”
I laughed bitterly. “Familiar environment? In my house? And where do I fit into this picture? Like a guest in my own life?”
Patricia shrugged, with that superior air that always bothered me. “It’s nothing personal. It’s just that Andrei needs stability. Your presence confuses him.”
Then the truth hit me. It wasn’t about Andrei. It was about control. She still wanted to dictate Radu’s life, and he was allowing it.
I took a step towards her son. “Andrei, do you know who I am?”
The little boy looked at me and smiled shyly. “You’re daddy’s wife.”
His words, simple and sincere, were like a blow to Patricia. I saw her face harden, losing its mask of confidence.
In that moment, I understood: there was no room for compromises anymore.
“Radu, you either choose a united family, or you remain caught between the past and the present. But don’t expect me to disappear to make room for her. This house is mine too.”
He remained silent, caught between two worlds. Patricia began to raise her voice, but I raised my hand.
“Enough! In a Romanian family, Sunday dinner is shared together, not with one hidden and the other in front. Children grow up healthy when they see respect, not dirty games between adults. If you want to raise a confused child, keep it up. If you want a strong child, choose the truth.”
In Radu’s eyes, I saw hesitation, but also shame. For the first time, I was no longer the woman who withdrew. I was the woman defending her life.
Patricia grabbed her bag and slammed the door behind her. “You won’t last with her, Radu. You’ll see!”
Andrei looked up and innocently asked me, “Are you staying today too?”
I knelt beside him and hugged him. “From now on, yes. I’m not going anywhere.”
Radu let his shoulders drop, as if he had been carrying a heavy burden for too long. “You’re right… I was afraid to resist, but that’s enough. I don’t want to live in a lie anymore.”
That evening, I prepared a simple dinner – polenta with cheese and sour cream, just like my grandmother used to make. We all sat at the table, and for the first time, my house truly felt like a home.
I learned then that respect is not demanded, it is imposed through truth. And that sometimes, to reclaim your place, you must have the courage to stay.
The ending was not just about me, but about us. A family that was beginning to build itself on the right foundation: honesty.
And even though the road would be tough, I knew one thing: I would never let myself be erased from my own life again.
