Plantain Syrup for Cough: How to Prepare It at Home with Just a Few Ingredients

Coughing can be extremely bothersome, especially during the cold season or when the immune system is low. A natural, effective, and easy remedy to prepare at home is plantain syrup. Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) is known for its anti-inflammatory, emollient, and expectorant properties, having been used for centuries to treat respiratory issues.

Benefits of Plantain for Health

Plantain contains active substances such as mucilage, flavonoids, tannins, and vitamins that:

  • Soothes throat irritations.
  • Thins mucus, facilitating its elimination.
  • Reduces inflammation of the respiratory tract.
  • Supports the immune system.

Ingredients Needed for Plantain Syrup

To prepare the syrup, you will need:

  • Fresh plantain leaves approximately 200 g.
  • Natural honey 300-400 g (for additional soothing effect).
  • Water 500 ml.
  • Lemon optional, for flavor and an extra boost of vitamin C.

Preparation Method

  1. Harvesting the leaves: Collect plantain leaves from clean areas, away from heavily trafficked roads or pollution sources. Wash them well and let them dry.
  2. Boiling: Chop the leaves and place them in a pot. Add water and simmer on low heat for 20-30 minutes, until the liquid reduces by half.
  3. Straining: Strain the obtained liquid through a fine sieve or cheesecloth, pressing the leaves to extract all essence.
  4. Adding honey: Once the liquid has cooled slightly (it should be warm, but not hot, to preserve the properties of the honey), add the honey and mix well.
  5. Adding lemon juice: If desired, add the juice of one lemon for extra flavor and benefits.
  6. Storage: Pour the syrup into a dark glass jar or bottle. Store it in the refrigerator and consume it within 2-3 weeks.

Usage Instructions

  • For adults: 1 tablespoon, 3 times a day.
  • For children: 1 teaspoon, 1-2 times a day (only if they are not allergic to honey).

Precautions

  • Avoid using this syrup for children under 1 year old due to the risk of botulism associated with honey consumption.
  • Consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.

This natural plantain syrup is an effective and economical solution to soothe coughs and support healing, bringing nature closer to your health.
