During a car trip, my dog was staring at me intently and barking

What I saw made my heart rise in my throat. In the back seat, just a few inches away from me, was an unknown man.

He was huddled, with a hood pulled over his head and his gaze lost on the car floor. I hadn’t even heard him get in.

He was breathing heavily, and in his trembling hands, he held a rusty knife.

I froze. All this time, Bella had not looked at me, but at him. She sensed something I had not noticed.

“Who are you and what are you doing here?” I said in a voice harsher than I expected.

The man did not answer. He just slowly raised his gaze, and his red, bloodshot eyes sent chills down my spine.

Bella began to growl deeply, as a warning.

Various scenarios flashed through my mind. We were on a deserted road, between two villages, and the phone signal was weak.

I tried to stay calm and pressed the door lock button. He smiled, a crooked and unsettling smile.

“Don’t be afraid…” he murmured, but his tone had the exact opposite effect.

Bella suddenly jumped over the front seat, placing herself between me and the intruder. Her barking filled the entire cabin, and my hands trembled on the steering wheel.

I pressed the accelerator and sharply turned onto a side road leading to a homestead. I knew that house; it belonged to an old woman from the village, Aunt Ileana, who always kept her doors open.

I sped into the yard, and the noise of the engine and Bella’s barking immediately attracted the woman.

“What happened, boy?” she shouted, coming towards me with a long stick in hand.

At that moment, the man tried to open the back door, but Bella grabbed his sleeve and pulled with unexpected strength. I got out of the car and shouted for help.

A few neighbors rushed over, some with pitchforks, others with axes. Within seconds, the intruder was pulled out and held down.

It turned out he was wanted by the police for burglaries in the area. He had hidden in my car when I had stopped at the store just minutes before I started driving.

Bella saved my life. If it hadn’t been for her intense gaze and that nervous barking, I might not have realized the danger until it was too late.

Since then, in the village, it is said that “Bella is not just a dog, she is the furry angel that watches over her owner.”

And me… I no longer go anywhere without her.
