Recently, my wife, Teresa, had become… distant

At the threshold stood an elderly woman, her white hair tied in a small bun, with moist and gentle eyes that looked at me in surprise.

— Can I help you, dear? she asked, in a warm voice.

I expected anything but this. I looked over her shoulder, searching for Teresa’s silhouette. I saw her, sitting on a chair, holding the hand of a frail, pale girl stretched out on a couch.

— What is happening here? I asked, my voice trembling.

Teresa got up and came towards me. In her eyes, there was no guilt, only tears.
— I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. This is my half-sister, Maria. I haven’t seen her in many years… She has been diagnosed with a serious illness and has no one. Every evening I come to help her eat, to clean, to keep her company.

I felt the shame burning my cheeks. I looked at that fragile girl, who smiled weakly at me, and I felt small.

The old woman at the threshold, Maria’s mother, said softly:
— Teresa is an angel for us. Without her, I don’t know how we would manage.

I entered, and the room smelled of linden tea and freshly baked bread. I sat with them, listening to stories from Teresa’s childhood, memories of apple orchards, of picking plums for jam, of summers spent in the countryside. We laughed, we cried, and I felt the wall built between us over the past months melting away.

When I left, I hugged Teresa tightly.
— I’m sorry I thought… otherwise. From now on, I will come with you.

She smiled, and in her eyes, I saw once again the woman I had loved from the beginning: warm, strong, and kind. And I knew that no matter how hard life would be for us, our hearts would remain united.

Sometimes, suspicion blinds us, but the truth… the truth can heal everything.
