I MARRIED A HOMELESS MAN TO CHALLENGE MY PARENTS

The man in front of me wore a perfectly tailored suit, and his once tangled and unkempt hair was now impeccably styled. Freshly shaved, with a confident and calm gaze, he seemed to have stepped out of a completely different world than the man I had picked up from the street.

— We need to talk, he said, taking a step towards me.

I stood frozen, my bag still on my shoulder. My heart was racing.

— Don’t be scared… but I haven’t told you everything about me, he continued.

— What do you mean? I asked, trying to steady my voice.

Stan ran his hand through his hair, seeming to gather courage.

— I haven’t always been… the way you found me. Before I ended up on the street, I ran a company. I had everything I could ever want. But I lost it all after my brother betrayed me and my partners abandoned me. I wanted to disappear, to forget everyone and everything. That’s how I ended up where you found me.

I felt my legs tremble. The memories of the last month – how we ate together, how we laughed at bad TV shows – now took on a different hue.

— And why didn’t you tell me? I asked with a lump in my throat.

— Because I didn’t know if your intentions were real or just… a rebellion against your parents. I wanted to see who you are beyond appearances. And honestly, I think I fell in love with you.

His words hit me harder than anything I could have anticipated. Tears filled my eyes. I didn’t know if I was crying out of anger, relief, or the fact that, in all this madness, my heart was starting to beat differently.

— And now? I managed to say.

He smiled, a warm and sincere smile, so different from anything I had seen from him before.

— Now I want to be with you not out of a contract, but because I choose you. And if you want… I want to show you who I really am.

He pulled a golden key from his pocket and handed it to me.

— This is the key to my house… the house where I grew up, the house I lost and have now regained. I want it to be your house too.

I stood staring at the key, as tears streamed down my cheeks. Beyond all the crazy story I had been through, I understood that life can offer you the greatest surprises just when you think everything is just a game.

And in that moment, I knew that for the first time in my life, I had married not to defy someone, but because I had found something that neither my parents, nor money, nor rebellion could give me: a man who chose me, not my image.
