A mother gave her sick son medication for 20 years

His hands began to tremble, and the phone screen almost slipped from his grasp. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. His mother — the woman who had always told him she would do anything for him — was mixing something into his medication.

He rewound the recording, trying to convince himself that he might have been mistaken. Maybe it was just harmless powder. Maybe it was something for flavor. But no… his mother’s reaction was too careful, too calculated. She moved her hands with cold precision, and her usually serene face now looked frozen.

He hadn’t slept a wink all night. The next morning, when Maria entered the room with her usual smile and said, “Come on, sweetheart, it’s time for your pills,” he felt a shiver down his spine.

“Mom,” he said with a trembling voice, “what’s in these pills?”

She stopped abruptly. Her eyes widened, but she quickly regained her composure.
“What do you mean, my dear? They’re your usual medications. The doctor has prescribed them for years.”

“I know… but I noticed something strange. I saw you… mixing something into them.”

For a moment, silence fell between them like a heavy fog. Maria sighed deeply, let her hands rest in her lap, and sat down at the table.

“Ionuț, you shouldn’t have seen that.”

He felt his heart tighten.
“What does this mean, Mom? What have you done to me?”

Maria bit her lip, tears in her eyes.
“I did everything to protect you. The doctors don’t understand. You… you have no illness, my dear. But you’ve always been fragile, scared, and I thought that if I kept you under control, if I gave you something to calm you down, you would be safe.”

“So you lied to me?! For twenty years?!”

“I didn’t lie to you out of malice, Ionuț. I only gave you small doses, something to keep you calm, to prevent those episodes. I just wanted to have you close to me.”

He was left speechless. His entire life — all the doctor visits, all the pills, all the worries — was now collapsing in front of a harsh truth: he had been held captive in his own home, by his own mother.

He looked up at her. Tears were streaming down his cheeks, but something new was being born in his soul — a mix of pain and determination.
“Mom, I need to leave. I need to live… without lies.”

Maria stood up, trying to reach out to him.
“Please, don’t hate me. I did everything out of love.”

“True love doesn’t mean controlling someone’s life,” he said in a low but firm voice.

He walked out the door without looking back. The outside air felt cleaner than ever. For the first time, he felt like he was breathing freely.

It took him a few months to rebuild his life. He went to a psychologist, started working, and met new people. It still hurt, but he was learning, step by step, what freedom meant.

One evening, he received a letter from Maria. Inside was a photograph of the two of them from childhood, and a note: “Maybe I was wrong, but everything I did, I did for you. I love you, Mom.”

Ionuț smiled bitterly, but sincerely. He placed the photo on his nightstand and quietly said:
“I forgive you, Mom. But now… it’s my turn to live.”

And for the first time in twenty years, he went to bed without taking any pills.
