When I was fifty-two, I received an unexpected sum of money

I rented a small studio near the market. Modestly furnished, but with plenty of light and the scent of linden flowers coming through the window in the morning. I had almost forgotten what it was like to open my eyes without feeling the need to prepare something for someone else.

In the first few days, I didn’t know whether to feel guilty or liberated. I wandered through the aisles of the store, buying only what I liked. Sweet oranges, lavender soap, an old recipe book.

I made it a habit to go to the park and sit on the same bench. I didn’t say much. I just observed. A grandmother teaching a child to play chess. A young man with a guitar. Two women laughing to tears. There was life. Not perfect, but alive.

One day, at the café downstairs, a girl asked me what I wanted. I smiled and said, “A coffee with milk and… the beginning of another life.”

She laughed. The next day she asked me if I wanted to help some elderly women with cooking at the social center. They needed someone skilled. I went. I made stuffed cabbage, fasting cakes, soups like my mother used to make. They applauded me. One of them said, “Madam, you brought us home on a plate.”

I cried in the bathroom, but out of joy.

After a month, I bought myself a new dress. Blue. Like the May sky. When I looked in the mirror, I saw Elena. Not my mother. Not my grandmother. Not the woman “in need.”

But the woman who is reborn, at 52, with dignity.

My son sent me a message. Catalina is pregnant again. They want a nanny. They asked me if I would come back.

I simply replied, “No. But I wish you well.”

Sometimes, in life, you have to leave not because you no longer love. But because you finally love yourself.

Today, when my neighbors say, “You are so cheerful, Mrs. Elena,” I smile at them.

Because I know one thing: it takes courage to leave. But even more to start again.

And I… have started.
