A MOTHER SERVED TIME IN PRISON IN PLACE OF HER SON

Maria Ionescu cried silently in the middle of the night, curled up on the pillow stuffed under her head, somewhere in a corner of a strict regime detention block. She was already in her fourth year behind bars, and although time passed, she felt that her entire life had been swallowed by a bitter night, infinitely long. As if she permanently tasted wormwood in her mouth.

Yes, a mother was in prison instead of her own son.

Now, as the last days before her release trickled away, she almost trembled at the thought of seeing her son, Andrei, again. She imagined that he would take her home – just as she had envisioned thousands of times in her mind. But when she realized where they were heading… her entire body froze. “Come on, don’t cry, Ana, you should be happy! Tomorrow you will finally get out of this hole, you will be with your son. From now on, he should carry you in his arms!” – her cellmate, Sofia, tried to console her.

Sofia’s words sounded almost prophetic – although she had no idea how grim the meaning of the “coffin board” she mentioned would be.

Maria Ionescu had always been a gentle, reserved woman with a kind heart. Behind bars, she soon began to be called “Madam Professor” or “Little Rose” – like a flower among weeds. Others could only guess what such a person could have committed.

“Madam Maria, why were you imprisoned?” – they asked her more than once. “Did you perhaps put the infusion in the wrong place at the hospital?”
Maria had spent her entire youth, from twenty to fifty, as a nurse in the emergency surgery department of the local hospital. Everyone loved her – both doctors and patients. She had a kind word for everyone. When the news spread that she had ended up in prison, half the town revolted. No one understood what had happened. Why?

The answer was painfully simple: for nothing. Simply because she was a mother. A mother for whom the life of her only son was more important than any treasure.

Maria would always remember that autumn Sunday evening. She had already prepared dinner – but her son, Andrei, had not come home. Although he had promised to return by five. It was already past six, but the key did not turn in the lock. Maria called him, increasingly anxious, but only the robot voice answered: “The number you have dialed is not available at the moment…”

Finally, the lock began to rattle, and Maria jumped up and hurried to the hallway. There stood Andrei. His disheveled coat hung dirty on him, his hair was tousled, his gaze empty and terrified. His hands trembled.

“Mom… I hit a man with the car… An old man. I didn’t see him. I was talking on the phone, I was distracted… I called an ambulance right away, they came… But I left before the police arrived. Although that doesn’t help. There are cameras everywhere. They will find out. And they will put me in prison. My future is over. My marriage is over. You know, next month was supposed to be my wedding with Silvia. Her father is rich, a businessman. He had already introduced me to his enterprise. Luxury, travel, money… And now it’s all over. I will become an inmate.” – Andrei collapsed against the wall, buried his face in his hands, and began to cry.
Maria leaned towards him, starting to comfort him.

“There isn’t. Unless…” – Andrei stopped crying, then suddenly knelt before her.
“Mom, please, I beg you, you are the only one I can ask this of. Don’t let my life be destroyed. If I go to prison, Silvia will leave me, her father will disinherit me, I will never get another chance. And you… you are almost retired. You have nothing to lose. Take it upon yourself! Just a few years… After that, I will give you everything you want. Comfort, security, respect!”
Maria was shocked by what she heard. She looked silently at her son, then whispered:

“Mom, don’t be naive! A lawyer will just stir up trouble. We are already late. I thought you would do anything for me…” – he looked at her accusingly.
“I would, my dear… if it’s good for you, then yes.” – Maria’s eyes filled with tears. – “But how could I take your place?”
His face lit up.

“But I haven’t driven in twenty years! My license expired a long time ago.
“Don’t worry, mom. Connections, money – we will sort everything out. I will get you a document that even the strictest expert won’t find anything wrong with.”
Maria served dinner, but she was only present in body. Andrei ate as if he had already won the battle. And she… she didn’t sleep all night.

In the following days, events unfolded: interrogations, paperwork, the prosecutor’s office, then handcuffs – and the court. The four-year sentence hit her like a thunderbolt. The old man Andrei hit, unfortunately, died in the ambulance.

Maria ended up behind bars – and thus began a descent into hell. However, she never rebelled. The other inmates respected her, helped her, appreciated her. Only her son seemed to slowly disappear from her life.

She received a few letters, a few visits, but they were cold, formal. Maria was not upset, though. She loved Andrei – he was everything to her. And she waited. She served her sentence – until the last day.

The day arrived that Mrs. Maria had been waiting for years. The prison door closed behind her for the last time – she was finally free. Trembling, she looked around beyond the gate: she was looking for Andrei, her son. The one to whom she had given every year spent behind bars. But no one was waiting for her.

She took a few steps outside when a man’s voice called her from behind:

Maria turned around. A well-dressed man stood there.

“Andrei sent me. I’m his driver. I’m waiting for you in the car.
“A… why didn’t Andrei come personally?” – she asked in a trembling voice.
“Important business meeting. He didn’t give more explanations.
[ ] The answer cut her like a freezing wind. Still, she nodded and got into the car. She thought they were heading home – but the vehicle drove in the opposite direction.

Andrei said they have a new office around here, that’s where I’m taking you.
Maria suspected something was wrong. But her heart softened suddenly when she saw her son. He was there, in an expensive suit, with a confident smile.

“Andrei, my dear! It’s so good to see you again… Tell me, how are you? How is your business going? Is Silvia well?
Andrei answered briefly, as someone who didn’t want to talk much. Finally, Maria could no longer bear it:

Andrei was silent, then suddenly said:

Maria almost froze.

“I wouldn’t put it that way, but yes. But don’t worry, I’ve already sorted it out.” – With that, Andrei pulled out a document. – “Death certificate. Yours. Official. You’ve already “died” for four years.
“What… what is this?! You mean… you bought a document declaring me dead?! But… I’m alive! Andrei, this is a crime!
“Don’t dramatize. It’s just temporary. A month, two months, and it’s done. Then we’ll revoke it.
Maria just stood there, as if struck by lightning. Her voice trembled:

Andrei shrugged:

“I want to go home!” – Maria burst into tears.
“It’s not possible. If you go home, the authorities will find out you’re alive. Then they will take me for forgery. You know what? I arranged a great place – a nursing home not far away. Care, maintenance, peace. Just a month, then you return, and everything will be fine.
“So it’s not enough that I spent four years in prison for you, now you’re exiling me too?!” – Maria shouted.
“Mom, it’s just temporary. Don’t make a drama.
Maria cried, but she could no longer resist. She was weak. Her own son was pushing her towards a new humiliation – and she, like a gentle animal, accepted again. She knew she had become a shadow of her former self. She followed the man to the nursing home, with her head down.

The institution was not particularly terrible – but after four years in prison, Maria’s soul detested any institution. Days passed, weeks. And Andrei? He never returned. Not after a month. No call, no letter, no news.

Maria prayed every day. She took out the small icon she had received from her mother – and implored: “Lord, finally give me true freedom. I am alone, but at least let me be at home…”

And perhaps the heavens listened to her. One day, two officials appeared: a woman in civilian clothes and a police officer in uniform.

Are you Maria Ionescu? – the woman asked sternly.
“Yes…
It has been discovered that a false death certificate was issued in your name. This is a crime. You already have a criminal record, so this is serious…
“But I didn’t know anything about this…!” – Maria stammered.
The police officer crossed his arms.

Come on. First prison, now forgery?
Maria paled. The police officer continued:

But don’t worry. We already know that your son is behind this situation. We found out. He is already abroad, but we are looking for him. Can you help us find out where he might be?
Maria sat down. Her stomach tightened. She didn’t want her son to end up in prison. No matter what, he was still her son.

No… I don’t know – she said slowly. – I don’t know where he is.
The police officer looked at her suspiciously.

Are you sure?
Sure. I’m just temporarily here because my home is under renovation…
Quite transparent – the police officer muttered. – But we will find him anyway.
And with that, they left.

Maria sat still for a long time. Everything hurt her. Yet… she felt relieved. Because that also meant she no longer had to hide. She could leave the nursing home.

And when she finally returned home – to her house – she clasped her trembling hands.

I’m home – she whispered. – Alive, under my own name.
The apartment hadn’t changed at all. Everything was the same as when they took her away. But the person who returned home was not the same.

And the loneliness… that remained with her forever.

Mrs. Maria was home again. The silence of the four walls now sounded completely different than before. Memories of the past stood like shadows on the furniture, on the walls. Slowly but surely, she settled back in: she cleaned, put everything in order, just as she had left it years ago.

But loneliness was a cruel companion. Deep in her heart, she still waited for Andrei. Or at least news about him. A letter. A voice message. Anything. Three years passed like this – three gray, hopeless years.

Her days passed in a routine: a little walk in the morning, shopping, lunch, reading, then a long silence in the evening.

In front of the store, there often stood a homeless man. He was blind – a scruffy beard, tattered coat, sunglasses under which a blind gaze looked into the void. Maria often gave him change. There was an indescribable pain on the man’s face – and this feeling particularly touched Maria. Perhaps it attracted her the familiar expression of human collapse. But she never approached him. He never spoke either.

Then came a Saturday that changed everything.

Maria went to the store in the morning, with her usual list: bread, milk, cheese. The blind man was still there. But something was strange. His body was bent forward, his hand on his chest… Maria immediately ran to him:

No response. Maria, terrified, called an ambulance. In the meantime, she grabbed his hand to check his pulse – and then… then her blood froze in her veins.

On the man’s wrist was a birthmark. Exactly there. And it looked exactly like Andrei’s.

Maria just stared, then whispered with a trembling voice:

Lord… no… it can’t be…
The shape of the hands… his fingers… his lips… everything was familiar. Only the eyes – they were empty, gray, blind.

Andrei… is that you… – she whispered, and knelt beside him, embracing him.
People looked in astonishment at the elderly woman who was kissing the homeless man while crying. A passerby approached:

He… he’s my son! My son!
The ambulance arrived within minutes and took the man away. And Maria stood crying, trembling in the emergency waiting room. Her thoughts were tangled, her heart beating hard.

Every day I passed by him… and I didn’t recognize him… my own son… my mother’s heart didn’t say a word…
Soon the on-call doctor appeared:

“Thank you… just let me see him…
And Maria entered the room. When Andrei heard her voice, he whispered just that:

Maria rushed to him, embraced him. She said nothing. Just cried and rested her head on her son’s chest.

Then, slowly, Andrei began to tell. The rich life had collapsed. Silvia left him, her father disinherited him. He fell ill – he lost his sight. And when he had no one left, he wandered homeless. He didn’t want to return home. He didn’t dare. He was ashamed of what he had done.

Maria held his hand.

From that day on, they never parted again.

Maria was by her son’s side every day in the hospital. She held his hand when the doctors examined him. She fed him when he couldn’t eat. She told him stories, read to him, just like in his childhood. She gave life back to her son – but now differently: with love, with forgiveness.

And Andrei – that crushed man who once betrayed her – slowly found his way back to something human. He no longer dreamed of luxury. But only of a small room, a warm soup, and a mother to be by his side.

What a mother gives her son, no hell can erase from him.
