Myth or Truth: Can Rice Water Soothe an Irritated Stomach?

Rice water, often considered a simple and accessible remedy, is used in many cultures to soothe the stomach. But what is the truth behind this popular belief, and what do scientific studies say about its effects on the digestive system?

What is Rice Water?

Rice water is the liquid left over after boiling rice in water. It should not be confused with commercially available rice milk. This water can be obtained either by boiling (the most common method) or by soaking raw rice in water for several hours.

It contains starch, minerals such as potassium and magnesium, traces of B vitamins, and compounds with potential protective effects on the digestive mucosa.

Potential Benefits for an Irritated Stomach

1. Soothes the Gastric Mucosa

Rice water forms a light film on the stomach mucosa, which can provide a temporary protective barrier against gastric acid. This effect is similar to that of mucilages from plants such as marshmallow or flaxseeds.

2. Reduces Mild Diarrhea

A study published in The Lancet (2001) showed that rice water can be effective in reducing the duration of diarrhea episodes, especially in children. This liquid helps with rehydration and provides simple carbohydrates that can be easily digested.

According to research, children treated with rice water had fewer liquid stools and were rehydrated more effectively than those who received only oral rehydration solutions.

3. Easy to Digest

For individuals experiencing nausea, gastric discomfort, or gastritis, solid foods can further irritate the stomach. Rice water provides a gentle source of energy and helps maintain an adequate blood glucose level without irritating the stomach.

4. May Soothe Nausea and Heartburn

Some people claim that warm rice water helps alleviate feelings of nausea and heartburn. Although there are not enough clinical studies yet, its buffering effect against gastric acid seems to contribute to this soothing sensation.

How to Properly Prepare Rice Water

Ingredients:

  • 100 g of white rice
  • 1 liter of water

Preparation Method:

  1. Rinse the rice to remove impurities.
  2. Boil it in 1 liter of water for 30 minutes.
  3. Strain the liquid and let it cool.
  4. It can be consumed warm or at room temperature, unsweetened.

For an extra soothing effect, a pinch of salt or a drop of honey can be added (if there are no restrictions).

Contraindications and Precautions

  • It is not a substitute for medical treatments. In cases of severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, or blood in the stool, medical consultation is mandatory.
  • People with diabetes should consider the carbohydrate content.
  • Not recommended in cases of rice allergy or in rare cases of starch intolerance.
