The tractor driver plows the land by the river, and the plow gets caught on a chain

In his hands, soaked in mud and murky water, was an old iron chest, locked with a huge padlock. Ion stood still for a few seconds, trying to understand what he was seeing. The chain seemed rusted, and the chest had a strange symbol engraved on it, resembling an anchor.

His heart was pounding. He looked around – there was no one. Just a few seagulls and the monotonous sound of the engine. Slowly, he took the wrench from the tractor’s toolbox and tried to open the padlock, but the metal was as hard as stone. He gently struck it with a crowbar, and the padlock broke in two.

When he lifted the lid, he felt the heavy smell of old iron mixed with damp earth. Inside were several canvas bags, filled to the brim with old coins, glimmering slightly in the pale sunlight. He took one out and wiped it on his sleeve — it bore the image of a ruler.

Ion immediately understood that this was not just a simple piece of iron. He was holding a treasure.

He stood in the field for a long time, unsure of what to do. Various thoughts crossed his mind: to call the police, to inform the mayor, or… to stay silent and take the chest home. The thought of the money that could save his farm gnawed at him. For years, the “Răsăritul” farm had barely made a profit. The tractors were old, debts to suppliers were growing, and workers’ salaries were paid late.

“If I sold just a part… just a few coins,” he whispered to himself.

But something inside him held him back. His father, also a tractor driver once, had always told him: “Son, honesty is the only wealth that doesn’t rust.”

He sighed deeply, climbed into the tractor, and drove towards the village, with the chest tied behind. On the way, the clouds parted, and a ray of sunlight broke through the branches.

Upon reaching the town hall, he asked to see the mayor. When he placed the chest on the floor and told him everything, people gathered curiously around. The mayor, a man over 60, looked at the coins and immediately called the county museum.

A few days later, specialists confirmed: the treasure came from a lost shipment during World War II. It was valued at over 1.5 million lei.

The state offered Ion a substantial reward — 15% of the value. When he received the money, he cried. He bought two new tractors, paid off the farm’s debts, and raised the workers’ salaries.

A few months later, the fields of the “Răsăritul” farm were greener than ever. And the people in the village told everyone about the simple man who chose honesty over greed.

One evening, Ion went out again to the banks of the Danube, where he had found the chest. He watched the sunset, smiled, and whispered: “Father, you were right… honesty truly doesn’t rust.”
