Everyone turned towards the door. In the doorway stood a tall man with graying hair, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. His cold blue eyes locked directly onto Elena.
“Elena Cârstea?” he said, his voice filling the room.
Lauren stood up, bewildered. “Dad? What are you doing here? You weren’t supposed to come in yet…”
But the man didn’t even look at her. He approached Elena, who was still trying to gather her things from the floor, and bent down, picking up the photograph of the smiling boy.
“Do you remember me?” he asked, his voice trembling slightly.
Elena looked at him closely, confused. “Mr. Mitrea…? It can’t be…”
The man shook his head, a bitter smile on his face. “Yes, it can. Twenty-five years ago, a woman with tear-filled eyes came to my house and asked for work. That was you. You raised the child alone while I… I lived with the guilt of not being there for you.”
A murmur rose among the guests. Lauren turned pale.
“Dad… what does this mean?” she whispered.
The man turned to her. “It means that Andrei is your half-brother.”
A scream was heard from a corner. The room froze. Andrei suddenly stood up, dazed, while Laura collapsed into her chair, covering her mouth with her hands.
“No… it can’t be…”
“It’s true,” Mitrea said. “Elena and I had a relationship before I married your mother. I didn’t know she was pregnant. I only found out last year when I discovered an old letter from her. But I was too cowardly to seek the truth until today.”
Several women began to cry silently.
Elena looked up, her eyes moist. “I didn’t want to ruin anyone’s life. I just wanted my son to have a beautiful day…”
Andrei quickly came to her side, lifted her off the ground, and hugged her. “Mom, you did nothing wrong. You are the only one who has always been there for me.”
Then he turned to Lauren. “I’m sorry… I didn’t know.”
Lauren burst into tears. Her father lowered his gaze, ashamed.
Elena slowly pulled away from her son’s embrace and said in a gentle but firm voice, “Sometimes, the truth comes out to show us who we really are. Not to destroy us, but to set us free.”
A heavy silence filled the room. Then, Andrei took his mother’s hand, and they walked together towards the exit.
On the way home, Elena felt her soul lighten for the first time in years. Maybe the wedding day wasn’t what she had dreamed of, but finally, she was no longer just a housekeeper looked down upon. She was a mother who had raised her child with dignity — and a woman who, despite the pain, held her head high.
And when Andrei said to her, “I love you, Mom, and I don’t need another family but you,” Elena understood that, in the end, it is not shame or money that gives a person value, but a pure heart and the strength to forgive.
