Milk, Onion, and Cloves Remedy: An Old Recipe for Cough and Low Immunity

In folk medicine, the combination of milk, onion, and cloves has been used for generations to combat persistent cough, colds, and general weakness. Although it may seem unusual, this recipe has a solid scientific basis: each ingredient provides clear benefits for the respiratory and immune systems. This warm and aromatic mixture can be helpful during severe cold episodes, especially when administered at the first symptoms.

Traditional Recipe with Milk, Onion, and Cloves

Ingredients:

  • 250 ml milk (cow or plant-based)

  • 1 medium onion (yellow or red)

  • 3-4 whole cloves

  • optional: 1 tablespoon of honey (only after cooling the mixture, if there are no contraindications)

Preparation Method:

  1. Cut the onion into quarters and place it in a pot along with the milk and cloves.

  2. Let it simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes until the milk takes on a light yellow hue and a slightly fragrant smell.

  3. Strain the liquid and consume it warm, preferably in the evening before bedtime.

  4. If desired, you can add a tablespoon of honey when the temperature drops below 40°C.

Benefits of the Remedy

1. Soothes Dry and Irritating Cough

Warm milk has a soothing effect on the irritated throat, while onion acts as a natural antiseptic. Cloves contain eugenol, a compound with anti-inflammatory effects that can reduce bronchial spasms. Onion stimulates the secretion of fluid mucus, facilitating the elimination of phlegm. Together, these ingredients can alleviate the cough reflex, especially in cases of viral colds.

2. Supports the Immune System

Onion is rich in quercetin, an antioxidant that modulates the immune response and reduces inflammation. Cloves have a strong antibacterial effect and inhibit the development of certain viruses, according to laboratory studies. Milk, especially raw or whole, contains essential vitamins (A, D, B12) and minerals that contribute to supporting immunity. Through synergistic action, this mixture can enhance the body’s ability to fight infections.

3. Helps Decongest the Respiratory Tract

Onion contains volatile sulfur compounds that help clear the nose and thin secretions. Cloves, with their intense and slightly menthol aroma, facilitate breathing. Warm milk relaxes the muscles of the respiratory tract, promoting a more restful sleep. This effect is especially valuable at night when nasal congestion and cough can disrupt rest.

4. Reduces Inflammation of the Throat and Oral Cavity

Eugenol from cloves is recognized for its antiseptic and soothing effects on the oral and pharyngeal mucosa. Consuming this mixture can reduce the sensation of burning and irritation in the throat. Additionally, milk acts as a protective layer for the mucosa, reducing discomfort. Onion also contributes with its bactericidal effects. The remedy is often used to soothe throat irritations caused by excessive talking or dry air.

Relevant Scientific Studies

1. Quercetin and Immune Health Journal of Clinical Immunology (2022)

This study analyzes the effects of quercetin, the flavonoid present in large amounts in onion, on immunity. The results showed that quercetin reduces systemic inflammation and can inhibit the replication of certain respiratory viruses. An increase in the phagocytic capacity of immune cells and a reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines were observed. The study suggests that daily administration of a natural quercetin supplement may help prevent viral infections. Additionally, it was found that bioavailability increases when quercetin is administered with fats, which supports the use of milk in this remedy.

2. Antimicrobial properties of clove (Syzygium aromaticum) Phytotherapy Research (2020)

The research investigated the antimicrobial activity of eugenol from cloves. In vitro studies demonstrated inhibitory effects on Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, as well as on certain strains of respiratory viruses. Eugenol also had an antifungal effect on Candida albicans. In combination with other ingredients, the synergistic effect was even stronger. The authors recommend using cloves in the form of infusion or decoction in alternative respiratory treatments.

Contraindications

  • People with milk allergies or lactose intolerance should replace cow’s milk with unsweetened plant-based alternatives (e.g., oat or almond milk).

  • Diabetics should avoid adding honey.

  • Onion may cause gastric discomfort in some individuals with irritable bowel syndrome.

  • Cloves, in large quantities, may interact with anticoagulants, so they should be avoided in such cases.

  • Daily use of the remedy is not recommended for periods longer than 7 days without medical advice.
