My 5-Year-Old Daughter

„…my brother standing in the doorway, with a bouquet of flowers in hand and a guilty smile on his face.”

I felt my stomach tighten. Behind me, my daughter ran happily towards him, shouting, “Daddy!” She hugged him with all the love in the world, unaware that that embrace was tearing my soul apart.

My brother, Radu, tried to meet my gaze, but he couldn’t. His eyes wandered to the floor, the walls, anywhere but on me. I took a step back and invited him in with a calm voice, perhaps too calm.

“Please, sir… father.”

My wife, Ana, appeared from the kitchen, pale as chalk. She held a towel in her hands, squeezing it so tightly that her fingers turned white. “I didn’t expect… you to be home so early,” she said, her voice barely audible.

I sat at the table and watched the scene unfold like a poorly directed play. Radu sat next to my daughter, speaking to her in a gentle voice, while Ana hurried to put food on his plate. I felt like exploding, but I chose to remain silent. In our village, the elders always said that “the truth rises like oil on water” – and I was determined to let it surface on its own.

We ate in silence, only the sound of cutlery clinking against plates breaking the quiet. My daughter recounted how Radu brings her chocolate, takes her to the park, and tells her stories before bed, “when mommy says she has to sleep.”

After dinner, I sent her to her room to play. It was just the three of us left in the living room. I took a deep breath and said, “I think it’s time for you to tell me the truth.”

Ana started to cry, but Radu tried to cover for her: “It’s not what you think…”

“It is exactly what I think,” I replied. “And I want to hear everything.”

Long minutes followed in which they tried to explain, to justify, to dress the betrayal in beautiful words. Their relationship had started years ago, “in secret, only now and then,” and I, busy with work, hadn’t seen the signs.

When I found out that my daughter, whom I had loved more than anything in the world, was actually my brother’s child, darkness fell before my eyes. I felt like screaming, pounding my fists, but I slowly got up and walked to the window. Outside, the sun was setting, casting a bright red light over our yard.

I remembered my grandfather’s words: “When you don’t know what to do, look at the sun. It reminds you that tomorrow will come anyway.” I took a deep breath.

I turned to them and said, “I want you to leave. Both of you. Now.”

Ana tried to protest, but my tone left no room for discussion. I took the suitcase from the closet and threw in a few clothes. Radu said nothing; he knew there was nothing left to save.

After they left through the door, I went to my daughter’s room. She was on the floor with her dolls. She looked at me with innocence and said, “Daddy, did you like dinner?”

I smiled sadly and picked her up. “Yes, my love… but from now on, it will just be you and me.”

That night, I fell asleep with her beside me, promising myself that I wouldn’t let the mistakes of others steal her childhood. Maybe her blood wasn’t mine, but her soul… her soul belonged to me.

And so, in the silence of the empty house, I began to build a new life – one without lies, but full of true love.
