A millionaire decides to take his daughter, who hasn’t spoken a word since she was little

Victor looked at her in surprise, unsure whether to say something or not. Isabela, on the other hand, slowly lifted her gaze, as if that voice had awakened a distant memory. The two girls stared at each other in silence, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to disappear.

— I am Maria, said the dirty girl, with disarming sincerity. What is your name?

Victor felt his heart tighten. Although he knew his daughter wouldn’t respond, a part of him still hoped. For a moment, Isabela did not react. But then, something changed. Her tiny fingers tightened around the toy, and her lips moved slightly.

— I… Isabela, she whispered.

Victor brought his hand to his mouth. His eyes immediately filled with tears. He had only heard that voice in dreams. It was weak, trembling, but real. Maria smiled widely, as if she were not surprised at all.

— It’s a beautiful name! Do you want to play with me?

Isabela nodded slowly. For the first time in years, she got up from the bench. Victor could not contain his emotions. He watched them run among the fallen leaves, laughing, holding hands. It was an image he never thought he would see again.

Time seemed to stop. The sun, the wind, the sounds of the park – everything disappeared in front of that miracle.

After a while, Maria sat down on the grass and began to draw with a twig on the ground. She drew lines, circles, then a big sun. Isabela sat next to her and helped, completing the drawing with her fingers.

Victor approached slowly.

— You are very talented, little one, he said with a trembling voice.
— That’s what my mom taught me… before she left, Maria replied with a faint smile.

In her eyes, there was a deep sadness, but also a light that Victor had not seen in anyone for a long time.

— Where do you live, Maria? he asked carefully.
— Wherever I can. I don’t have a home. I sleep near the train station, but it’s not bad. At night, there are many stars, and sometimes, an old man brings me warm bread.

Victor lowered his gaze. He didn’t even know what to say. The thought struck him that, although he had everything – money, a house, cars – he had not managed to save his daughter from silence. And yet, this little girl, coming from nowhere, had made her speak.

Then Isabela reached out and gave her teddy bear to him. The torn, dirty toy, but precious.

— Hold it, she said softly. Now her voice was clear, confident.

Maria received it with wide, astonished eyes. She hugged it to her chest, smiling.

— Are you sure? Victor asked, with tears in his eyes.
— Yes, daddy.

That word knocked him down. He sat on the bench, feeling everything heavy in him melt away. Years of silence, pain, and helplessness ended there, in the middle of the park.

Maria stood up, shook off the dust, and said:
— I have to go now. But don’t cry, sir. She will be fine.

Victor wanted to stop her, to take her home, to help her. But when he blinked, the girl had disappeared among the people. It was as if she had never been there.

Isabela sat back on the bench and looked at the sky.
— Daddy, do you think we will see her again?
— Maybe… but sometimes angels come only once, to remind us that it’s never too late to speak again.

The wind gently blew. The leaves danced, and somewhere far away, a child laughed. For Victor and Isabela, that day was no longer an ordinary one. It was the day when silence turned into hope.
