Ion stood frozen at the threshold, unable to believe what he was seeing. Ana’s gaze was filled with anger, and her sharp voice scratched at his soul. On the other hand, Maria’s voice was warm, almost like a caress. In Ioana’s eyes, though blind, fear was evident.
For the first time in a long while, Ion felt a knot in his stomach. He had spent years traveling the world for contracts and business, believing he was providing the best for his family. But at that moment, he realized that he had actually left his child without the most important thing: her father’s love.
He pushed the door open slowly. Ana turned around, surprised, suddenly losing her authoritative air.
— Ion! It’s not what you think!
— It is exactly what I think, he said calmly, but with a coldness that made her shiver.
He walked straight to his daughter, sat beside her, and stroked her hair.
— Daddy is here, Ioana. Everything is fine.
Maria stood up, embarrassed, ready to leave. But Ion stopped her with a gesture of his hand.
— Don’t go anywhere.
Ana opened her mouth to protest, but he raised his voice:
— Be quiet! I’ve been silent long enough!
A heavy silence fell in the room. Only Ioana’s sobs could be heard.
— You… yelled at my child? he asked in a cold tone, looking at Ana.
— I… was just trying to teach her to be stronger.
— Yelling at her? Humiliating her? Is that your idea of “motherhood”?
Ana retreated, flushed with anger and shame.
— Maybe if you had been home more often, I wouldn’t have had to take care of everything!
Ion remained silent for a few seconds. Her words struck him, but not as an excuse — rather as a confirmation of his own absence.
— You’re right. I was wrong to leave you alone. But my mistake doesn’t give you the right to yell at my child.
He stood up and turned to Maria.
— I apologize for how she spoke to you. From tonight on, you are no longer just the cleaning lady. I want you to take care of Ioana. Look after her as you did today.
Maria’s eyes filled with tears.
— Mr. Mărgineanu… I just wanted to calm her down.
— I know. And that’s exactly what she needs. Calm.
Ana stormed out, slamming the door, while Ion remained with his little girl in his arms. Ioana was touching his face with her tiny fingers.
— Daddy, you came?
— Yes, my love. This time, I won’t leave so easily.
In the days that followed, Maria became the gentle shadow of Ioana. She taught her how to navigate, how to feel the world differently. In the evenings, she read her stories, and in the mornings, she taught her how to tie her shoelaces by herself.
Ion watched them both from his office and felt his heart melting. For the first time in years, his house no longer felt cold.
After a month, Ana left for good. She didn’t leave a note. Perhaps pride, perhaps shame. Ion never asked.
One Sunday morning, Ioana sat on the couch, her hands outstretched.
— Daddy, I have a gift for you.
In her palms was a clumsily woven bracelet made of colored thread.
— I made it with Maria. She says it’s for good luck.
Ion smiled widely, with moist eyes.
— The most beautiful gift in the world, little one.
And in that silence filled with light, he realized that sometimes true love does not come from blood, but from simple souls that know how to love unconditionally.
