At the airport, a millionaire meets his former maid

Andrei stood still for a few seconds, looking at the woman who once brought him coffee in the morning and smiled shyly, asking for nothing in return.

It couldn’t be a coincidence. The twins had his eyes — the same deep blue shade, the same curious gaze, as if they wanted to learn everything from a single glance.

He approached slowly, his heart pounding wildly.

— Lidia… is that you?

The woman flinched. She looked at him as if she had seen a ghost from the past.

— Mr. Mureșan…

Her voice trembled. For a moment, it seemed she wanted to run away, but the babies in her arms held her in place.

— What happened to you? — he asked, trying to control his emotions. — Why are you here, on the floor?

— I have nowhere to go, Andrei. They kicked me out of the rented apartment, I couldn’t find work… and the money ran out. I came to the airport hoping to catch a bus to Cluj, to my sister. But I don’t even have enough for a ticket.

Andrei swallowed hard. Everything he remembered about that day six years ago hit him again — the moment when his mother stormed into the office, accusing Lidia of stealing an expensive necklace. He, blinded by anger and shame, hadn’t even listened to her.

— You didn’t steal the necklace, did you?

Lidia shook her head, tears in her eyes.

— No. But back then, no one would have believed me. The next day I found out I was pregnant… and I left.

Andrei felt the air cut off. He leaned towards the twins, who looked at him with the same gentle, curious expression.

— How old are they? — he barely managed to ask.

— Four…

Four years. Exactly how long it had been since Lidia disappeared without a trace.

Andrei brought his hand to his forehead, trying to regain control. The world around him moved slowly, like in a dream.

— Lidia, come with me. You can’t stay like this.

She looked at him skeptically.

— I don’t want your pity, Andrei. I don’t need money, just to know that my children will be okay.

— It’s not pity, it’s duty, he said in a serious voice. If they are my children — and I feel they are — then I have a lot to make up for.

For a moment, their gazes met again. Lidia burst into tears.

Andrei took an envelope with money from his pocket, the only one he had with him.

— Here are ten thousand lei. For starters. But please, come with me to the hotel. You need a safe place for you and them.

Lidia hesitated, but eventually accepted. Andrei took her bag, and they headed together towards the airport exit.

On the way, he said nothing. He watched as she held her children close and realized that she had lost years of their lives.

Upon arriving at the hotel, the staff was astonished to see the owner entering with a tired woman and two sleeping twins.

— Prepare the apartment on the fifth floor, he said shortly.

That evening, Andrei sat on the terrace for a long time, looking at the city lights. In his mind, Lidia’s voice echoed, now calm, whispering to him that she had never wanted his wealth, just a little justice.

For the first time in many years, Andrei felt he had a true purpose.

The next day, he sought out his mother. It was a difficult conversation, full of accusations and tears, but the truth came to light: the necklace had been found, hidden by an envious relative.

— I destroyed your life, he told Lidia. But if you want, I can try to rebuild your future.

She looked at him with tears, but also with a glimmer of hope.

— I don’t know if I can forgive you, Andrei. But the children deserve to know their father.

Then, Andrei knelt beside them and hugged both of them tightly.

Finally, after so many years of loneliness and guilt, he found what no amount of money could ever buy: forgiveness, family, and peace.
