Basil Under the Pillow and in Tea: Between Myth and Phytotherapy

Basil (Ocimum basilicum), a sacred plant in many cultures, is not just a symbol of purification or a fragrant spice. In Romanian folk tradition, basil was placed under the pillow for prophetic dreams or to soothe the soul. Today, natural medicine and modern phytotherapy confirm its calming and beneficial effects on the nervous, digestive, and respiratory systems.

Chemical Composition of Basil

  • Essential oils (eugenol, linalool, methyl chavicol) – calming, antibacterial, and antispasmodic effects
  • Tannins and flavonoids – antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Vitamins: A, C, K, and B complex – support cognitive and immune functions
  • Minerals: calcium, iron, magnesium – essential for the nervous and muscular systems

What Do Scientific Studies Say?

Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2020): basil has a strong anxiolytic and adaptogenic effect, reducing stress and improving sleep quality in tested subjects.
Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2015): daily consumption of basil tea reduced symptoms of insomnia and nervous agitation among young adults.
Frontiers in Pharmacology (2021): the volatile compounds in basil relax smooth muscles and have antispasmodic action, useful in colic and gastric discomfort.

Basil Under the Pillow: Between Belief and Science

In Romanian tradition, basil was placed under the pillow to attract good dreams, love, or spiritual protection.
From a scientific perspective, the scent of essential oils (linalool, eugenol) has a relaxing effect on the nervous system.

Inhaling these compounds from fresh flowers or dried basil can help induce sleep and reduce anxiety.
