Can I clean your house in exchange for a meal?

In the morning, he found both of them in the bright kitchen of the villa. The smell of freshly ground coffee mixed with the aroma of pancakes, and for the first time in years, Enrico was not alone at breakfast.

Sofia laughed with her mouth full of maple syrup, while Chiara, still slightly embarrassed, wiped the corner of her mouth with a napkin. Enrico watched both of them, trying to figure out if everything was real or just a dream from which he would wake up.

After breakfast, he suggested they go together to the garden behind the villa. The air was fresh after the storm, and the grass sparkled with drops of dew. Sofia ran among the rose bushes, while Chiara stopped from time to time to watch her, with a smile mixed with happiness and melancholy.

– Be careful, Sofia! – Chiara shouted. – Don’t fall!

Enrico approached her. – You know… when you left, we sold the rose garden we had at the villa in Tuscany. I couldn’t bear to see it without you there.

Chiara lowered her gaze. – I’m sorry… for everything.

He gently touched her hand. – You did what you thought was best. I don’t hold a grudge. But I want to recover everything we lost.

At lunch, Enrico took her to the city center, to a restaurant they used to go to in the past. The waiter, a man over 60, recognized them immediately.

– Wow… you two? After all this time? – he smiled warmly.

Chiara blushed, and Enrico nodded. – Yes. We’re trying to find each other again.

After lunch, they walked through the old streets, talking. Chiara confessed details about the hard years, about the nights spent in cold studios, about the treatments that drained her strength. He listened in silence, occasionally squeezing her hand, as if he wanted to give back all the lost strength.

In the evening, they returned to the villa. Sofia had fallen asleep in the car, with her head on her mother’s lap. Enrico carried her in his arms to the room prepared for her, covered her with a soft blanket, and stood for a few moments watching her.

– She’s incredible, – he whispered.

– She’s all I have, – Chiara replied from the doorway.

Enrico turned to her. – No. From now on, we both have her.

That night, they sat on the balcony again. There was no storm anymore, just a clear sky sprinkled with stars. Enrico took out a small velvet box from his pocket.

– This is not a marriage proposal… yet. It’s just a promise that you won’t go through anything alone anymore.

Chiara opened the box and found a simple ring with a small stone. Tears filled her eyes. – Enrico…

– Don’t rush to answer. Stay. Let me be part of your life and Sofia’s.

She hugged him tightly, like someone reunited after a lifetime.

And, for the first time in years, they both felt that the future was no longer a void, but a path they would walk together.
