Japanese scientists have discovered a new beneficial property of coffee that can help maintain the health of a vital organ.
It is about coffee, which helps restore brain circuits, especially affected in the case of older individuals due to the degradation of neuronal cells as the brain ages. Memory loss, deterioration of cognitive functions, and poor learning ability are issues faced by the aging population of the planet, which is increasing year by year as life expectancy rises.
Hypoglycemic and Anti-Cancer Effects
According to the new study, researchers from Tsukuba University have discovered a substance in coffee that slows down brain aging – the alkaloid trigonelline, which has a positive effect on brain functions related to memory, spatial thinking, and imagination. It thus has great therapeutic potential as a hypoglycemic and neuroprotective agent, also having anti-cancer effects.
This plant ingredient, similar to some plant toxins like nicotine and cocaine, serves to block adenosine receptors to keep us awake.
Reduced Risk of Depression by 20% in Women
Moreover, it is known that the main substance in coffee – caffeine – increases dopamine production, a neurotransmitter responsible for movement, memory, and thinking.
Dopamine is also associated with feelings of pleasure, helping in the fight against depression. According to another study conducted at Harvard University, women who consume coffee have a 20% reduced risk of depression.
Prevents the Onset of Liver Cirrhosis
Additionally, scientists in Singapore have found that individuals who consume two cups of coffee a day have a 66% lower risk of developing liver cirrhosis. According to them, caffeine helps prevent the formation of gallstones.
Experts state that moderate coffee consumption reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by about 25%, as well as the risk of developing a range of other conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease and heart problems. Specifically, the chances of developing heart disease decrease by 24% for coffee drinkers.
Attention, too much coffee can cause insomnia, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, and hand tremors. Additionally, coffee can lead to calcium loss from the body. Therefore, women going through menopause should consider adding milk to their coffee.
