Comfrey Tincture, a Quick Relief for Back Pain: How to Prepare and Use It

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is one of the most valued medicinal plants for musculoskeletal disorders, used for centuries in the treatment of back pain, sprains, bruises, and fractures. The tincture obtained from comfrey root is recognized for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and regenerative effects on tissues.

The comfrey root contains:

  • Allantoin stimulates cell regeneration and tissue repair.
  • Mucilages have emollient and soothing effects.

Comfrey Tincture Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 50 g dried and crushed comfrey root
  • 250 ml food-grade alcohol (40-50%, such as vodka or homemade spirits)

Preparation:

  1. Place the root in a glass jar.
  2. Pour the alcohol over it and seal tightly.
  3. Let it macerate for 14 days, shaking daily.
  4. Strain and store the tincture in a dark bottle in a cool place.

Usage Instructions (External Use Only)

  • Apply through local massage or in the form of compresses on the painful area (back, knees, shoulders).
  • Can be used 2-3 times a day for several days or until pain relief.
  • It is ideal to apply it on clean skin, possibly slightly warmed beforehand (with a warm towel), for better absorption.

Contraindications and Precautions

  • DO NOT administer internally! Due to pyrrolizidine alkaloids, comfrey can be toxic to the liver.
  • Do not apply to open wounds or very sensitive skin.
