Garlic and Butter Ointment that Relieves Bone Pain

Bone pain, whether due to rheumatism, arthritis, or joint wear, is an increasingly common issue, even among younger individuals. Natural remedies can provide profound relief, especially when prepared correctly and applied consistently. One of the oldest recipes from the northern region of Moldova is a simple garlic and butter ointment, a salve that warms, relaxes, and alleviates deep pain.

Why Garlic and Butter?

Garlic (Allium sativum) has a well-known anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, due to its high content of allicin and sulfur compounds. Modern studies show that when applied locally, garlic reduces joint inflammation and improves peripheral circulation.
On the other hand, natural butter (preferably homemade, unsalted) serves as a vehicle for the active principles of garlic, as well as providing an emollient and mildly soothing effect on the skin.

A study published in International Journal of Inflammation confirmed the ability of garlic extract to inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α and IL-6, making it ideal for external use in osteo-articular pain.

Recipe: Garlic and Butter Ointment

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed well
  • 2 tablespoons of butter (ideally homemade, unsalted)
  • 1 tablespoon of beeswax (optional, for a thicker consistency)

Preparation Method:

  1. Place the butter in a small pot over low heat, being careful not to overheat it.
  2. Add the crushed garlic and mix well.
  3. Let everything simmer on low heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, without browning the garlic.
  4. If using beeswax, add it at this point and let it melt completely.
  5. Remove from heat, let it infuse for 10 minutes, then strain (if you prefer a finer texture).
  6. Pour the ointment into a small glass jar and store it in the refrigerator.

How to Use:

Apply a small amount of ointment to the painful area (knees, elbows, back, ankles, etc.).
Gently massage until fully absorbed, ideally in the evening before bedtime.
The area can be covered with a warm cloth or a linen material for enhanced effect.
The treatment can be done for 7-10 consecutive days, with a break of a few days, then it can be resumed.

Benefits:

  • Reduces local inflammation – garlic inhibits pro-inflammatory enzymes, reducing swelling.
  • Stimulates circulation – helps nourish the tissues around the joint.
  • Relaxes muscles and tendons – provides a relaxing effect due to the warm application.
  • Reduces joint stiffness – consistent use contributes to better mobility in the morning.
  • Has local antibacterial effects – in case of micro-tears or subcutaneous inflammation.

Contraindications and Precautions:

  • Do not apply to irritated, wounded skin or areas with eczema.
  • Individuals allergic to garlic or dairy products should avoid use.
  • Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women without medical advice.
  • Conduct a tolerance test on a small area of skin before the first application.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes – garlic can cause irritation.
