How to Make Chamomile Water for Irritated Skin and Puffy Eyes

Chamomile water is one of the most delicate and effective natural remedies for caring for sensitive skin and tired eyes. With soothing, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects, this simple preparation made from Matricaria chamomilla flowers has been used for generations in beauty and skin healing rituals.

Why is chamomile so effective?

Chamomile contains:

  • Azulene – an anti-inflammatory and soothing compound for the skin
  • Bisabolol – stimulates skin regeneration, reduces redness and irritation
  • Flavonoids – with antioxidant properties and protection against oxidative stress factors
  • Natural salicylic acid – purifies pores and helps with mild acne

Simple Recipe for Chamomile Water

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of dried chamomile flowers (preferably from a reliable source, free from chemical treatments)
  • 250 ml of still or distilled water

Preparation Method:

  1. Boil the water and pour it over the chamomile flowers in a glass or ceramic bowl.
  2. Cover with a lid and let it steep for 15 minutes.
  3. Strain the infusion and let it cool completely.
  4. Store the liquid in a glass container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Traditional Method (without boiling)

This method is more delicate than the usual infusion, with milder soothing effects, ideal for sensitive skin and the eye area.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of dried chamomile flowers
  • 200 ml of cold still water (or spring water, distilled water)

Preparation Method:

  1. Place the flowers in a clean glass jar.
  2. Pour cold still water over them.
  3. Let it steep in the refrigerator for 12-24 hours.
  4. Strain carefully and store the liquid in a dark, airtight glass container in the refrigerator (it lasts 2-3 days).

This water can be applied directly to the face or used in compresses for puffy eyes. It does not irritate, does not dry the skin, and maintains the soothing properties of chamomile.

How to Use Chamomile Water?

For Irritated Skin:

  • Apply with a cotton pad, as a tonic lotion, 1-2 times a day.
  • It can also be used as a base for soothing face masks (with white clay, yogurt, or aloe vera).

For Puffy Eyes:

  • Soak two cotton pads in cold chamomile water.
  • Apply to the eyelids for 10-15 minutes, lying down in a quiet place.
  • Repeat daily or as often as needed.

Demonstrated Benefits:

  • Reduces inflammation and redness of the skin (ideal for rosacea, dermatitis, mild sunburn)
  • Soothes irritations caused by allergies or aggressive cosmetic products
  • Reduces bags and dark circles under the eyes
  • Helps restore the skin after treatments with glycolic acid or retinol

A study from Molecular Medicine Reports (2020) confirmed that chamomile extracts significantly reduce skin inflammation and accelerate tissue healing following burns or chemical irritations.

Precautions:

  • Do not use if you are allergic to plants from the Asteraceae family (chamomile, calendula, echinacea).
  • Always test on a small area of skin before extensive application.
  • Avoid direct contact with the eyeball; use only externally, on the eyelids.
