Arthritis is a joint disease that causes inflammation and pain around the joints. It is usually classified as either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 52.5 million adults in the U.S. suffer from arthritis.
Essential oils have many uses, including for serious health issues. This arthritis ointment made at home uses three powerful essential oils: turmeric, ginger, and myrrh, along with a carrier oil, coconut oil.
Fractionated coconut oil may work best, as it blends easily and remains liquid regardless of temperature. You can also use unrefined coconut oil, which has more benefits but blends a bit harder. Jojoba oil is another good carrier oil.
Turmeric oil sends messages to the limbic system of the brain, which is known to influence the nervous system. It may inhibit the production of key inflammatory molecules associated with conditions such as arthritis, asthma, painful intestinal disorders, and many other ailments.
Ginger essential oil is composed of about 90% sesquiterpenes, which are defense agents with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger oil is effective for pain associated with inflammation. A study found that when patients with knee osteoarthritis took ginger extract twice a day, they experienced less pain and needed fewer pain-relief medications than those who received a placebo.
Lastly, myrrh essential oil contains sesquiterpenes, as well as other primary active compounds called terpenoids, both of which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
Mix all four ingredients in a bowl until well combined. Store this arthritis ointment in a dark glass jar (to preserve the properties of the essential oils) with a lid.
Simply massage the ointment into the areas where you feel pain. Use it twice a day.
