I sat there in the courtroom, trying not to cry

I felt my knees weaken. I didn’t know whether to cry or laugh. I looked at Luca — small, skinny, but with his chest out and a pride in his eyes that you rarely see. He was defending his mother, like a knight would defend a castle.

Derek was trying to say something, but the words were stuck in his throat. Everyone was looking at him like a thief caught with his hand in someone else’s pocket. His lawyer was trying to salvage the situation, but the judge had raised his hand in a gesture that allowed no rebuttal.

After the hearing, I bent down and hugged Luca, and he whispered in my ear:
— I knew I had to show it. What he was doing wasn’t right.

Tears filled my eyes. Not just because we had saved ourselves, but because my boy had become a man.

A few weeks later, the court decided: joint custody, with residence at the mother’s. Additionally, a tax investigation was initiated against Derek. It all started from that forgotten paper in a safe and from a child who had the courage to tell the truth.

Our life didn’t change overnight. I still had to wash clothes in the tub sometimes, but it felt like I was doing it with more dignity. Luca and Arya received scholarships from an organization that helps single mothers. We got internet at the end of the month, and Arya danced around the room when she managed to get on YouTube and watch “Childhood Memories.”

I started cooking stuffed cabbage again, just like my mother used to do on Sundays. I didn’t have money for expensive meat, but I filled them with love, rice, and a bit of sautéed onion. We ate them together on the living room rug, and the kids told me they tasted like home.

One day, Luca said to me:
— Mommy, when I grow up, I will always protect you.

I stroked his forehead and replied:
— You don’t have to, sweetheart. Because from today… I won’t let anyone walk all over me anymore.

And I didn’t let anyone.

Never.
