In a world where kindness often goes unnoticed, some people do more than expected to change things for the better. Today, we have gathered touching stories about authentic displays of courage, generosity, and devotion. Whether through big or small gestures, these acts of kindness and bravery remind us that goodness exists all around us.
Story 1
I was 18 years old and had just moved to New York City, trying to adapt to the lifestyle there (after living in a small town in the South). It was my first time using the subway, and I had no idea how to buy a MetroCard. I was standing in front of the only working machine, with a line of people behind me, trying to get my card. I started to panic a little, knowing that people were waiting. Those behind me began shouting at me: “Hurry up!” and “Are you stupid?” I started to tear up, which made me panic even more. Then a guy stepped out of line and asked everyone to calm down. He came over to me, showed me step by step what to do, and paid for a card valid for 12 rides. He patted me on the back and said, “Next time someone yells at you, yell back at them; they’ll leave you alone.” At that moment, I didn’t feel so alone anymore. Without his kindness and guidance, I probably wouldn’t have stayed there and experienced all those wonderful things.
Story 2
I was at a meeting, and he seemed so nice. When the bill came, the waitress looked at him and said, “Sir, your card has been declined.” He went pale. I smiled and paid for it myself. As we were leaving, the waitress grabbed my hand and whispered, “I lied.” Then she slipped the bill into my hand. I turned it over — and there were two desperate words written: “Google him.” When I got home, I searched his name — and my blood ran cold. He was a con artist. Apparently, he had a scheme: he would get into relationships with women, gain their trust, and then start stealing from them. He had been to prison multiple times for theft, mainly from places where he had previously worked. One of his ex-girlfriends had even written detailed blog posts about their relationship, including how they met — and it was eerily similar to how he approached me. I can’t be grateful enough to that waitress. Her courage, kindness, and presence of mind saved me from something terrible. I realized she staged the incident with the card just to have a reason to give me that message.
Story 3
After giving birth and starting a new job, I suffered from severe depression. I struggled to understand how the return system worked, and a very impatient customer started yelling at me. I was still extremely vulnerable and burst into tears. The next customer in line left the store, and I thought she was upset too. But she came back with cookies. She went and bought me cookies. And I started crying again.
Story 4
A few years ago, I ran out of gas on my way home from work. I managed to pull my car onto a shoulder so I wouldn’t block traffic. I was stuck there — I had no one to call and no money with me. Three people stopped to help me. The first guy asked what happened, if I was okay, and if I had money for gas. I told him I ran out of fuel, that I couldn’t get to a gas station, and showed him a check I hadn’t cashed, so I had no cash. He left. Then a second car came. I talked a little with that person, but they said they couldn’t really help, which was fine. The third person who stopped was an undercover police officer. Very kind — he helped me push the car onto the grass and came up with ideas to solve the problem because he didn’t want to leave me there. While I was talking to the officer, the first guy returned with a 10-gallon can full of gas. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart and even asked for his number so I could pay him back. He refused, saying it was no problem. I never asked that man to spend money on me, but he did anyway, and I am grateful to him. I just regret that I will probably never have the chance to return the favor.
Story 5
I worked as a producer on a radio talk show. The show I worked on wasn’t very popular, so we didn’t get many calls from listeners. On my birthday, I was at work, as usual, when a man called and had his whole family sing “Happy Birthday” to me. He had never called before and never called again. I never met him. My birthday suddenly became wonderful.
Story 6
It was Christmas, and I was working in a toy store in a mall. A teenager came in wearing a shirt with the logo of my favorite video game. I complimented her on the shirt and asked where she got it because I had never found that game on a women’s shirt — only on men’s. She told me where she got it and then left. I went into the break room to tell my boyfriend to buy it for me for Christmas, and when I came out, she was waiting for me. She handed me a bag and said, “Merry Christmas! I hope I got the size right,” and then she left. She went out to buy me that shirt, and that was the nicest thing that ever happened to me.
Story 7
I lost my tickets for the 2012 NBA Finals on my way to the stadium. I got to the gate and realized they were neither in my bag nor in my pockets, and I felt so sorry for myself and my brother, who could no longer get in. I stepped back from the gate and just stood there watching hundreds of people enter the game. A guy and his girlfriend approached and asked if we were okay and if we needed extra tickets. We explained what happened, and he told us he had received some extra tickets from a friend and had no one to give them to. So, dude and your girlfriend — thank you so much!!!
Story 8
I was about 12 years old and went to a bookstore with my cousins. We bought some books and then went outside to start reading them. An elderly man kept watching us, and after about ten minutes, he got up from the bench and went into the bookstore. After about five minutes, he came out with three gift cards. He came over to us smiling and said, “I love seeing kids read,” then handed each of us a $20 gift card. I had never been so surprised and touched.
Story 9
He didn’t just offer food that night. He offered a warning. I took a last-minute flight to my hometown, not knowing if my brother would still be alive when I landed. I sat in shock, thinking that the next hour and twenty minutes would be the longest of my life — and that was probably showing on my face. There were two emergency exit seats on that plane, then a wide space in front of the door (with no window seat), which gave the person behind a lot of legroom. A guy sat there and said how much he liked the seat — the extra space, etc. Then he leaned forward and said to me, “I saw your face when I walked past you, and I realized you needed to talk to someone to distract you from what’s weighing on your heart, so I’ll talk. Whenever you want to talk about what’s bothering you, just let me know; otherwise, I’ll chat with you about anything.” I don’t know if that man will ever realize how much his gesture and words touched me. Six years later, I still think about how moving it was that he talked to a stranger who seemed to be going through hell. My brother is fine now, but during the flight, I didn’t know if I would see him alive again.
Story 10
I was in my first year of college, and on my way home, a torrential rain started. I had forgotten my umbrella and decided to walk home in the rain. An elderly lady, about 60 years old, approached me and shared her umbrella with me. She walked alongside me until I got home, sharing some life lessons along the way. It lasted about ten minutes. I wish I could meet her again to thank her.
