Lavender water is considered a natural elixir for the skin, used for centuries for its soothing, toning, and antiseptic properties. Obtained through the distillation of lavender flowers, this floral water is a gentle yet effective remedy suitable for all skin types, especially for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
What Does Lavender Water Contain?
Lavender water contains active compounds extracted through steam distillation:
- Linalool with antibacterial and calming effects;
- Linalyl acetate with anti-inflammatory action;
- Geraniol and borneol recognized for their antiseptic properties;
- Traces of lavender essential oil that enhance the skin’s regeneration and protection effects.
How to Prepare Lavender Water at Home?
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of dried lavender flowers (or 2 cups of fresh flowers)
- 2 cups of distilled water
- Ice cubes
- A pot with a lid (preferably stainless steel)
- A heat-resistant glass bowl
Preparation Method (improvised distillation):
- In a large pot, place the glass bowl in the center.
- Surround the bowl with lavender flowers in the pot.
- Pour distilled water over the flowers, being careful not to let it enter the bowl.
- Place the pot lid upside down. On top of the lid, add ice cubes so that the vapors will condense more quickly.
- Simmer on low heat for 30-40 minutes. The vapors will condense on the lid, and the liquid will drip into the glass bowl. This is the hydrosol – pure lavender water.
- Let it cool, pour it into dark-colored bottles, and store it in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.
How to Use It:
- Facial tonic after cleansing, applied with cotton pads;
- Spray lightly misted on the face;
- Soothing after sun exposure applied directly or with a compress;
- For acne-prone or irritated skin daily application in the morning and evening.
What Do Studies Say?
A study published in Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2021) showed that lavender hydrosol has antimicrobial activity against bacteria involved in acne, such as Propionibacterium acnes.
Another study, published in Molecules (2022), highlighted the anti-inflammatory effect of volatile compounds extracted from lavender, demonstrating a reduction in redness and skin inflammation upon topical application.
Dermatologists’ Opinions:
Dr. Andreea Rusu, dermatologist:
Lavender water is an excellent adjunct in the skincare routine for sensitive or acne-prone skin. It does not replace dermatological treatments but significantly contributes to calming the skin and maintaining a healthy microbiological balance.
Dr. Mihai Dinu, aesthetic physician:
Unlike classic alcohol-based toners, lavender water does not dry out the skin and can even be used by patients with dermatitis or rosacea, with very good results.
Precautions:
- Test on a small area of skin before use;
- Avoid using in the eye area;
- For very sensitive skin, additional dilution is recommended.
