Health authorities are on alert as the number of viral infections has alarmingly increased in recent times. Typically, patients who visit their family doctor complain of fever, throat pain, or cough.
In addition to the medication prescribed by the doctor, several effective natural remedies can be used depending on the symptoms. One such remedy is onion syrup with walnuts and thyme, which soothes cough and acts as a good expectorant, helping to clear the respiratory tract.
Ingredients:
5 normal yellow onions
5 whole walnuts or walnut shells
1 sprig of thyme or 2 teaspoons of thyme
3 tablespoons of multifloral honey
750 ml water (3 cups of water)
Preparation Method:
Wash the onions with their skins and crush or slice them. Wash the walnuts and crack them open but not completely, so they remain almost whole. In a pot with a lid, boil the onions with the walnuts over low heat for 30 minutes.
The onion syrup prepared with the skins has a dark yellowish-brown color and is much more effective than the one made without the skins. After about 30 minutes, add a sprig of thyme, remove from heat, and store in a covered container. After another 15 minutes, strain the syrup and add the honey.
It is recommended to consume 2-3 tablespoons per day for adults for at least one week.
