MY HUSBAND HIRED A MAID TO “HELP” ME

The room was dark. Only a faint blue light from the digital clock pulsed in the background. On my laptop screen, the recording played slowly. At first, it seemed to be just me, in bed, deep in a heavy sleep.

But then… the bedroom door opened.

It wasn’t me. It wasn’t Greg.

It was Maria.

She walked in slowly, barefoot, with a naturalness that seemed entirely inappropriate for an employee. She held something that looked like a cup. She approached me, stared for a long moment, then set the cup on the nightstand and left.

I continued to scroll.

On another night, she entered again. But this time, she sat on the edge of my bed. She looked at me for minutes, touched my cheek, smiled, and whispered something that couldn’t be heard.

I felt a cold shiver down my spine. There was no more care. No more support. It was obsession.

The next morning, I went to work like a robot. My mind was trapped in those images. I couldn’t sit still. I called my mom over, under the pretense that I missed her. I put the laptop in front of her. She had always been the kind of woman who senses when something is wrong.

She looked, sighed, and said only this: “This girl is not right. And Greg knows it.”

Greg? Why would he be involved?

That evening, I waited for Greg in the kitchen. I placed her coffee cup on the table. The same one I had seen in the footage. He walked in, and when he saw me, he flinched. It wasn’t his usual smile. It was guilt.

“What is this?” I said, pointing at the screen.

He looked. And said nothing more. He just closed his eyes and whispered, “I didn’t want it to come to this…”

Then everything came to light. Maria wasn’t just the daughter of his mother’s friend. She was… his high school ex-girlfriend. The one his parents loved. The one he had left for me.

“I just wanted to help her, she was going through a tough time…” he tried to justify.

But his help had become encouragement. And his silence, complicity.

I felt the floor collapsing beneath my feet.

The next day, I changed all the locks. I called my boss and requested two weeks off. I left for my grandparents’ village in Argeș. I needed peace, fresh air, fresh hay, and the sound of crickets.

There, in the old yard with ancient walnut trees, I found something I had lost long ago: my self-confidence.

I don’t know if I will trust a man anytime soon. But I know for sure that when you feel betrayed not just in love, but also in your safety, you must not stay silent.

I returned to the city stronger. I changed my home. I changed my job.

And Maria?

I filed a criminal complaint. It was all I could do legally.

And Greg?

He got exactly what he deserved: the loneliness he had hidden from me so carefully behind his false smile.

Sometimes, a hidden camera doesn’t just show you the truth about others.

It also shows you who you truly are.
