My Husband Was at Work When My Father-in-Law Approached Me

Inside was a stack of banknotes, bound with a rubber band. They smelled of dampness and dust, but they were real money, a lot of money.

I was left speechless, my hands trembling. My father-in-law looked me straight in the eye and said slowly:

— This isn’t the first time I’ve found something like this.

I collapsed on the edge of the bathtub, trying to understand. Was my husband hiding money from me? Did he have debts, or… worse, was he involved in something illegal?

My mother’s words echoed in my mind: “Hidden money brings great troubles into the home.” In the countryside, the elders used to say that a person who plastered their secrets in the walls would never know peace.

I felt my stomach tighten. I wanted to run, to leave everything there, but my father-in-law gently grabbed my arm.

— We can’t leave things like this, he said. You need to ask for explanations.

I nodded, but my heart was racing. I got up and started gathering the banknotes. There were thousands of lei, maybe even tens of thousands. They felt like they were burning in my hands.

I placed the bundle on the table and remained in the kitchen, silent, waiting for my husband to come home. Every minute felt like an hour.

Finally, I heard the key in the door. My husband entered, tired, but when he saw our gazes and the bundle on the table, he froze.

— What does this mean? — I burst out, my voice trembling. — Why are you hiding money in the walls?

He looked at me, then at his father, and sighed deeply.

— It’s not just money, he said slowly. It’s the family’s savings, gathered over many years. My father knows. My grandfather did the same. In this house, money has always been hidden in the walls.

I was stunned. I didn’t know whether to cry with relief or scream with anger.

My father-in-law averted his gaze, confirming his words. In his eyes, there was shame, but also a kind of bitter pride.

— That’s how it has been for us, he murmured. In hard times, people didn’t trust banks. They hid what they held most dear in the walls.

I felt all the tension break within me. The whole house seemed to breathe with us, as if the walls knew our secrets for generations.

I looked at my husband and said:

— I don’t want to live with secrets. I want us to be a family where the truth isn’t hidden in cement.

His eyes filled with tears. He came towards me and embraced me.

— You’re right, he whispered. From now on, nothing will be hidden.

And then I understood: it wasn’t the hidden money that was the curse, but the silence between us. We decided to put an end to the old habit and start a new path, one where family and trust would be stronger than any treasure buried in the walls.

And for the first time in a long time, I felt free.
