My Mother Never Liked My Wife

My mother never liked my wife. On the day of our wedding, she cried and said to me, “Son, she is not the one for you!”

I replied, “One day, you will love her too!” She nodded in agreement.

Two years later, my mother passed away. I went to clear out the house she lived in. I suddenly stopped when I looked under the bed. There were dozens of legal documents belonging to my wife, some dating back years.

Looking closer, I realized they were all related to debts — tuition fees, personal loans, credit cards — everything. All had been paid. By my mother. The total amounted to $48,000.

Then I understood: my mother had discovered my wife’s debts and knew that if I married her, I would also take on that financial burden — and I would have to give up my own education. So she used her pension money and all her life savings to pay them off… in silence.

She kept the secret from me to protect me, and that explained why she did everything she could to stop me from marrying her. When I asked my wife, she told me that my mother had spoken to her — and had asked her to keep everything a secret.

Story 11:
Every year, on my birthday, my dad gives me a strange and cheap gift. A rock, a potato, a spoon with my name scratched on it. But each comes with a story. For example, the rock is from our camping trip. And the spoon is from my first meal eaten alone when I was little.

At 25, I have a box full of these strange things. Each object triggers a memory stronger than any expensive gift. My dad always says, “Big things fade. Stories remain.” And now I believe him. That box is priceless.
