Natural Remedies for Preventing and Treating Acne + Causes of Its Appearance

The skin is a reflection of our overall health, which is why glowing, beautiful skin often results from proper care, hydration, and a healthy diet. On the other hand, acne and blackheads can indicate oxidative damage, poor nutrition, and hormonal imbalances.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is the most common skin condition.
Main causes of acne:
– clogged pores
– bacteria
– hormonal imbalances
– improper diet (refined grains, sugar, unhealthy fats)
– stress and related issues (anxiety and depression)
– use of certain medications (corticosteroids, contraceptive pills)
– sleep deprivation
– skin irritation
– genetic predisposition
– smoking
Once believed to primarily affect adolescents, acne can also appear in adulthood, even if individuals have never had an issue with acne in the past. Acne among adult women is often linked to hormonal changes and imbalances that occur during the menstrual cycle or when transitioning to menopause; however, it is important to consider the causes mentioned above.
1. Restore the skin’s pH balance
You can use pure apple cider vinegar as a toner in the morning and evening. Apple cider vinegar is packed with potassium, magnesium, acetic acid, and various enzymes that kill bacteria on the skin. Chronic acne can result from bacteria and fungi that continue to spread and grow on the skin’s surface. Soak a cotton pad and clean the infected area.
2. Use natural face masks
To hydrate and heal the skin, try applying masks a few times a week. Yogurt, honey, cinnamon, essential oils, and other ingredients can be used to create masks that combat the causes of acne.
Yogurt and honey: mix one tablespoon of honey with one tablespoon of yogurt. Apply to the face, let it sit for 10 minutes, and gently wipe off with a damp cloth.

Honey and cinnamon: mix two tablespoons of honey, one tablespoon of coconut oil, and half a teaspoon of cinnamon. Apply to the face, avoiding the eye area. Let it sit for 10 minutes and gently remove with a damp cloth. Honey and cinnamon used together help fight acne due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties.
You can add a few drops of tea tree oil to any of the above masks. This oil is considered one of the best remedies for acne.
3. Exfoliate regularly (gently)
Clogged pores and dead skin contribute to acne. It is important to exfoliate properly to remove the buildup of sebum. First, you need something solid (sea salt, brown sugar, oats) and a liquid component (coconut oil, kefir, honey). These bases help combat bacteria, fungi, and skin candida, while the textured ingredients help remove clogged pores and dead skin.
To prepare your own exfoliant, mix two tablespoons of dry ingredient with 1-2 tablespoons of base.
4. Use tea tree oil
Acne responds well to treatment with tea tree oil. It is used as an antiseptic and for treating wounds. Like coconut oil, honey, and dairy products, it fights bacteria and fungi.
To make a simple acne remedy using tea tree oil, mix 4-8 drops of tea tree oil with one teaspoon of coconut oil or jojoba oil. Gently apply to problem areas. Mild stinging is normal, but if the application causes burning, stop using it immediately. Always use a carrier oil, as tea tree oil can be too harsh if applied directly to the skin.
