Do you frequently suffer from constipation? Even though fiber-rich foods are not always helpful, consider a detox with salt water. This technique is designed to help you cleanse your colon and digestive system by triggering a mild intestinal flush.
The key component of a salt water recipe is the salt itself, as it is necessary for many biochemical processes. Detoxing with salt water has become more popular in the last decade to facilitate digestion and toxin elimination as part of a cleansing program. Consuming a mixture of salt ignites your body’s own natural detoxification and waste elimination mechanisms, helping to get your digestive system back on track and, in the process, making you feel lighter, less sluggish, and less burdened.
Detoxing with salt water is most effective when done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. If you do it later in the day, make sure you haven’t eaten anything in the last one or two hours.
To perform a simple detox with sea salt at home, start with 2 tablespoons of sea salt, which can be colored salt, such as Himalayan pink salt or gray salt. (Make sure it is pure salt, as you do not want to use iodized salt; always ensure that no iodine is added.)
Heat 1 liter of filtered water. The water should be warmer than room temperature but should NOT boil and should NOT be very hot. It should be cooler than the temperature you would use to make tea or coffee.
Take a glass jar with a lid and add the salt, warm water, and a little fresh lemon juice (which helps reduce the salty taste). Shake it vigorously to completely dissolve the salt. Ensure that no granules are visible, as they will settle at the bottom of the jar if they remain undissolved.
Drink the mixture quickly, within a few minutes if possible (under 5 minutes is the goal). Since it doesn’t taste great (it’s very salty!), you will likely want to drink it as fast as you can.
Lie on your side and massage your belly on one side, then repeat on the other side. Holding the mixture for at least 30 minutes is ideal.
Shortly after finishing the mixture, you should start to feel the urge to go to the bathroom. Once you feel you can no longer hold it, go to the bathroom. You may need to go several times, sometimes needing to use the bathroom multiple times before being completely cleansed and emptying your colon.
After doing any kind of cleanse, it is a good idea to take a probiotic supplement and try to incorporate healthy foods that help establish healthy bacteria in your internal gut flora (microbiome) and provide essential nutrients/electrolytes.
