The sea buckthorn shrub grows in Mediterranean regions. In our area, it is cultivated mainly as an ornamental plant. In natural therapy, the bark from the roots and branches, as well as the leaves and flowers, are used from this species. Health food stores offer extracts from sea buckthorn that can be useful for certain conditions. Prof. Dr. Constantin Pravu mentions the diuretic, sudorific, astringent, and appetite-stimulating properties of sea buckthorn bark.
The flowers of the plant yield results in the treatment of jaundice.
The leaves of sea buckthorn are indicated for rheumatism and spleen diseases.
Low Immunity, Spleen Diseases
Sea buckthorn also has an affinity for the spleen. It is particularly recommended in cases of splenomegaly, which is an enlarged spleen. The spleen is an organ that plays an important role in protecting the body from infections.
A course with sea buckthorn extract will therefore help strengthen immunity.
Mrs. Carmen Ponoran states that both types of sea buckthorn, red and white, can be administered together in the form of gemmotherapy.
I recommend them for the following categories of people and situations:
- anemia in children
- growth period in children
- physical fatigue, mental exhaustion
- anemia in adults
- postpartum period, for restoring hemoglobin levels
- convalescence period
- aging period, for rejuvenating the body
Renal Lithiasis, Biliary Dyskinesia, Bloody Diarrhea
In these conditions, Dr. Constantin Pravu recommends a decoction prepared from the bark of sea buckthorn branches.
Use either 1 tablespoon of dried and crushed bark or 1 tablespoon of ground bark (powder). The plant is boiled with 250 ml of water for 5 minutes. It is administered as 1-2 cups of tea per day.
Jaundice
In the case of jaundice, the professor recommends an infusion made from dried sea buckthorn flowers. These are steeped in 1 cup of boiling water and left covered for 10-15 minutes. Consume 2-4 cups per day.
Rheumatism, Spleen Diseases
Boil 1 tablespoon of dried sea buckthorn leaves and branches with 1 cup of water. After 5 minutes of boiling, strain it. Administer 1-2 cups of tea per day.
For rheumatism, baths are also beneficial. In the bathwater, add a decoction made from 200 g of dried sea buckthorn leaves and branches and 10 liters of water. After boiling for 30 minutes, strain it.
The bark from the roots and branches is harvested in the spring. Similar to willow bark, it is peeled and cut into small pieces. It is left to dry and stored in paper or cloth bags. Sea buckthorn leaves can be harvested until July. The flowers are collected when in season, during the morning after the dew has lifted.
