The Poor Boy Pays 3 Dollars for the Bus Ticket of a Blind Old Woman

The next morning, as Oliver was getting ready to leave for school, a harsh wind was blowing. He pulled his hood over his head and stepped out of the house with his backpack slung over one shoulder, humming a tune from an old cartoon.

When he reached the corner of the street, just before getting on the bus, a tall, sturdy man with a serious face and a black coat blocked his path.

— Are you Oliver? the man asked, looking down at the 10-year-old boy.

Oliver stopped, frozen. He had never seen this man before.

— Yes… Why? he asked, hesitating.

— My name is Andrei. I am Maria’s son. My mother told me about you.

For a moment, Oliver thought he would be scolded. Perhaps the man was upset that the boy had involved his mother in a public scene. But Andrei knelt in front of him and, with teary eyes, handed him a paper bag.

— She said you were her angel. That without you, she wouldn’t have made it to the hospital and wouldn’t have held her grandson in her arms. She wanted to give you this.

Oliver took the package. Inside was a book. The very one he wanted to buy. With the author’s signature. And in the middle, a card that read: “For the boy who was a light on a dark day.”

Oliver’s eyes sparkled. He looked at Andrei, who continued:

— Mom said you sacrificed something important to you. But I believe you gained something even greater: the gratitude of an entire family. Thank you, Oliver.

The boy didn’t know what to say. He just hugged the book to his chest and, for the first time, felt that he too could be the hero of a story.

He got on the bus with a full heart. He knew that day would not be like any other.
He knew that sometimes, even a small gesture can change a life. Or two.

And on that day, between the pages of a book, Oliver had become part of a true story.
One that even he could not have imagined.
