In today’s world, where technology advances rapidly and some boast of luxurious possessions, there are life stories that still deeply impress us and make us reflect on the true values of life.
One of these stories is that of Aunt Fica, a 76-year-old woman from Romania, who has to live her life on a pension of only 15 lei a month.
Her full name is Jurj Fica, affectionately known as Aunt Fica, and she lives in the village of Ceru Băcăinţi, in Alba County, in a modest hamlet. She receives an incredibly small monthly pension of just 15 lei, a sum that barely allows her to survive.
Loneliness and Limited Help: During the summer, Aunt Fica manages to cope better thanks to the help of a neighbor who assists her with her animals.
However, winters are a huge challenge for her, when the cold and loneliness become hard to bear. At the top of the hills in the Apuseni Mountains, isolated and without contact with family or friends, Aunt Fica spends her old age in solitude.
Since she became a widow seven years ago, Aunt Fica survives on a small portion of her husband’s pension, which was 30 lei. Unfortunately, now she receives only half, that is, 15 lei, a symbolic amount that does not even cover basic necessities.
The area where she lives is so isolated that even the postman finds it difficult to make the journey to bring her pension. Aunt Fica practically lives alone, as there are only four other people in her hamlet, and the distances between houses are great. Her animals – a cow, a horse, and a few chickens – are her closest companions.
Solidarity and Hope: A young man who learned about her story decided to roll up his sleeves and help her. He ventured to Aunt Fica and later created an online support group to gather assistance.
Her needs are so simple yet crucial: basic food items such as oil, flour, and sugar, a new stove to cope with the harsh winters, and money to pay for electricity and phone bills. These seemingly simple necessities are vital for her daily survival.
This story reminds us of the power of community and the importance of helping our fellow beings when they need it most. Life can be incredibly difficult for many, but together we can bring about significant change, even in just one life.
I believe it is essential to get involved and try to offer these individuals a ray of hope and tangible support, showing that they are not forgotten and that there are still people who care.
It is a powerful reminder of the fundamental values we must share – humanity, empathy, and social responsibility.
