Water fasting, one of the oldest forms of detoxification, is gaining attention in modern science due to its spectacular effects on health. While it is known for its regenerative capacity, the most valuable mechanism activated during this fast is apoptosis—the process by which the body identifies and eliminates damaged, diseased, or potentially cancerous cells.
What is Apoptosis and Why is it Vital?
Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death, a kind of controlled self-destruction of defective cells. It is an essential process for maintaining the health of the organism, and its dysregulation is associated with serious diseases such as:
- cancer (due to the accumulation of abnormal cells);
- autoimmune diseases (where immune cells go out of control);
- neurodegenerative disorders (where excessive apoptosis affects neurons).
What Does Science Say?
A study published in Cell Research in 2018 showed that fasting periods (including water fasting) inhibit the mTOR and IGF-1 signaling pathways—two mechanisms involved in cell growth and the survival of diseased cells. By inhibiting these pathways, the body becomes capable of activating apoptosis more efficiently and eliminating cells with malignant potential.
Dr. Min Wei, co-author of several studies on water fasting, states:
Fasting reduces the energy available for diseased cells and makes them more susceptible to self-destruction. Essentially, it forces them to eliminate themselves.
How Does Fasting Favor Apoptosis?
- Reduces glucose and insulin levels, depriving abnormal cells of their preferred fuel.
- Blocks growth signals (IGF-1, mTOR), inhibiting the survival of diseased cells.
- Stimulates autophagy and apoptosis, accelerating the elimination of damaged cellular structures.
- Increases cancer cell sensitivity to programmed death, paving the way for new approaches in oncology.
How Long Does it Take for Apoptosis to Trigger?
Apoptosis can begin to activate within the first 24-48 hours of fasting, but the most significant effects appear after 72 hours. During this period:
- IGF-1 levels drop dramatically;
- genes controlling cell death are activated;
- the immune system is stimulated to better recognize abnormal cells.
Attention: Water Fasting is Not Suitable for Everyone!
It is essential to consult a doctor before starting an extended fast, especially if you:
- have chronic diseases;
- take daily medication;
- are underweight or have hormonal imbalances.
